Our summer vacations were dominated by road trips.
One of my first memories is of a very long car ride to Disney World, back in the 1970′s. It must have been in the winter because our little Ford Pinto didn’t have a heater and we kept warm with quilts.
That worked out great until my twin sister and I decided to ‘play horsey’ with our older brother. We used his belt for the reigns.
Around his neck. Great fun, until he puked chocolate milk. All over the blankets. That were keeping us warm. My next memories are of a cold car ride to Disney World.
Because we entertained ourselves.
Not something my kids excel at on our road trips these days. We’ve got the whole audiovisual thing going on in our minivan and a plethora of travel paraphernalia.
And I’m not about to change it. Because I like progression.

This reminds me of one of my favorite childhood memories. I was an only child, and my dad (bless his heart) was always trying to come up with new and fun things to do during the summer. One weekend he decided that we should take a 4-hour drive to Catskills Game Farm so that I could bottle-feed baby animals. I had a great time, but the smell of the place made my mom sick. A few minutes into our drive home we had to pull over so she could throw up. My dad and I spent the rest of the drive home loudly and boisterously singing “Mommy threw up in the grass!”

we always traveled when my son, now 38, was little. with one child it was easy. one time in canada he had to pee and we were in the country so we decided to pull over to the side of the road. The grass was cut all the same length but, guess what, there was a ditch under all that. The van tilted and there we sat. Of course my son peed and we had to wait for someone to come along to help us out. Not being an english speaking community and we spoke no french our hand signals finally got a tow truck out to help us. What nice people and no charge. After that we always carried a pee jug for him.

Oops So Sorry!! I’m new at this, but Tinkerbell would look so cute displayed in my new logitech speakers I won for an MP3 Player and I don’t have an MP3 Player, since I’m into computers not gadgets LOL. But I have to admit those speakers would sound a lot better if they had a MP3 player attached. Right now the sound is worse than gray noise, so quiet!! Well anyway I did enjoy your blog. I dread car trips. My twin 3 year olds do great on them–me is another story!!! We drove from WA to Jersey and had a pretty descent trip, other than the emergency hospital room visit for me, a UTI for one of my daughters, and then on the last day-the stomach flu. But we are safe and sound and moved into our new home!!!

I laughed so hard when I saw this page! I'm getting nervous about taking a road trip from Rhode Island to Florida in a couple of months with my husband, my parents, my sister, her husband and their two kids (ages 2 & 4). My parents used to take my sister and I on that same trip every year and I don't know how they maintained their sanity.
