Easter Story Eggs

One of my favorite celebrations is Easter.

I love Spring! And candy shaped like eggs!
But as a Christian, I enjoy sharing the Resurrection Story with my kids.
For the past 5 or 6 years, we have used Resurrection Eggs to tell the amazing story. Family Life created these incredible story-telling tools before I was a parent and they have been hugely successful. Wal Mart sells them for a fantastic price. If you can’t find them there, you can get them here (Resurrection Eggs).

The boxed set of plastic eggs come with a very good book that explains the story with Scriptures and ideas for celebrating. Each egg contains a symbol of The Resurrection story.
We gave our set away this year to our Russian Friends to take with them on their trip.
Instead of buying another one, we thought it would be powerful to make our own!
I saved an egg carton and gathered a dozen plastic eggs.
We made a list of 12 items that are in the Resurrection Story and if we couldn’t find the object around the house/yard, we just used our creativity.
Here’s ours:
1. A picture of a donkey (Jesus triumphal entry)
2. Palm leaf from our front yard
3. A cup (from the Last Supper) We used a small lid to a water bottle
4. A flower (representing the Garden where Jesus prayed)
5. Some coins (Judas’ betrayal)
6. A piece of leather (symbolizing the whip)
7. A thorn (crown of thorns)
8. A paper cross
9. A dice (represent the soldiers who gambled for his clothes)
10. A nail (crucifixion)
11. A rock (to cover the tomb)
12. An empty egg (to remember the empty tomb!)
I think this is such a fantastic way to teach Easter in a tangible way. You can open all the eggs at one time or do like our family and begin twelve days before Easter and open one egg each night. We’re on day three and it’s such a fun way to end our day. Our kids take turns opening the eggs and we read Scripture.
Tonight we Googled the place of Jesus’ death because they had so many questions and thoughts….
It’s more than a story!
Kristen

Our children made them a couple of years ago and we treasure them and the story that goes with it!

Very cool! I think our church has a set of those. I’ll have to look in our “junk closet” where everything gets thrown in and lost.

We’ve started a new tradition with our girls this year. We’re completely separating the two events (Resurrection Sunday and Easter). On Saturday we’ll celebrate the arrival of spring and new beginnings and do the normal stuff (egg hunt and baskets). But Sunday is solely reserved for celebrating what Jesus did for us! I should find the egg set to share with them on Sunday.

    * Errrr… I wasn’t saying they were junk, just saying the eggs were probably in the junk closet.

I bought our Resurrection eggs a few years ago on clearance at Lifeway (it was after Easter). Making your own is great . . . and thrifty!

LOl! We have this set too and when I was reading what you used to make your own, and when I got to the cup – my brain immediately went to these little Barbie cups we have. =P

I sit and do Resurrection eggs with not only my daughter, but also with the kids after our Easter egg hunt.

Come back on WFMW for some Christian Easter ideas for kids!

We love doing this, but usually do it on Resurrection Day. I really like the idea of doing one each day leading up to Easter Weekend.

You might also like something we have. I bought a Easter Nativity years ago. It’s great. We read the Scriptures and move the figures around for each day’s events- well, Thursday, Friday and Sunday’s events. HTH

With kids in school Easter is all about the bunny and it’s hard, especially when they’re young, to find a good balance between the bunny and the cross. This looks like a wonderful tool and we will making or buying them this week. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for letting us in on what is inside the eggs…I might just have to get some Dollar Tree eggs and make our own! (The ones from FamilyLife are out of the budget and we don’t have a Walmart nearby). Great way to keep the Reason for the season in the right place :)

    Gina says:

thanks for sharing this, I’ve been wanting to do this with my kids but didn’t want to buy one-I couldn’t remember everything to include-now we’re going to get on it and do this to remember why Easter is such a big deal!

    Holly says:

We have done that also, it really makes us think. . .
Another idea I found, for breakfast, is ressurection buns. My girls love them for breakfast, and I only make them on Easter. I make my own bread dough, or you can use frozen, form into balls and flatten into a disc. Place a large marshmallow in the center, wrap and seal the dough around it, dip in melted butter and cinnamon sugar and bake–when they are done, they are like the tomb on Easter morning-empty!

    Donita says:

We got a set of these eggs last year and my son (2 1/2 at the time) liked them so much that he kept asking to play with them. I don’t know how long it took me to get over the those-are-special-so-don’t-play-with-them mentality, but he is still playing with them. We lost the donkey and the cup somewhere along the way, so I’m going to use your idease to make replacements. But we get to talk about Easter all year.

Very cool! I had never heard of this. I picked up a Lent family devotional before our move but in the craziness we didn’t do. I feel bad but at least I have a week to redeem myself.

My son’s teacher did this at The Easter party…so wonderful!

We love our resurrection eggs, too. One year we made a home movie with the different scenes that the eggs shared. It was quite a production! LOL!

We have also enjoyed reading the story Benjamin’s Box to go along with it.

    I love Easter time!

I just posted on my blog about our set of Resurrection Eggs that we just made! I love how you do yours, our items are a bit different. It’s such a great way to teach the Easter story to your kiddos!

We made these in my MOPS class last week – my 4 yr old is really learning a lot and loves to see what her egg has each night. We made ours to be preschool friendly – there are versions all over to look at – but the main thing is that she knows her Jesus loved her so much that he died for her so that she can go to heaven one day. What a blessing to watch!
