WFMW “Mom, I’m Bored” Summer Edition

Like it or lump it, summer is here.
We’re definitely in the liking it phase.
But I know the three dreaded words will escape the lips of my children when I least expect it!
I want to be prepared. I want my bag ‘o tricks to be stuffed with ideas to fend off those idle moments.
So, I will be referring back to this blog post (with your ideas) often.
Here’s my tip to beat summer boredom: School.
Yes, you read that right! Even though my kids are thrilled school is ending this week, I know they love playing school. It is fun being the one with the red pen!
I’ve been gathering some items and plan to set up ‘centers’ one day a week. I discovered some great teacher’s resources at The Dollar Store (like a hall pass, award charts and teacher stickers) and I found an awesome set of teacher stamps at a garage sale. I only have one red pen, so my kids will have take turns being the teacher. I bought a couple of summer bridge books and I plan on sneaking them in!
My real life friend, Cheryl, gave me this idea too: I created charts and gave them to my kids this week to fill out and color. They wrote down all the fun things they like to do at home. I laminated the lists and will keep them handy for those moments. Boredom just needs to be redirected!
Need more ideas? How about 216 of them? Inspired Letters, a new Etsy store, is giving away 216 Summer Ideas for Bored Children to FOUR WFMW linkers today! The ideas are housed in adorable mercantile mason jars and are suitable for K-12! (Winners will be announced Wed. night when I close Mr. Linky)
I just looked thru the one Inspired Letters gifted to me and I’m very excited to put these great ideas to use!
{Thank you for joining me for WFMW! You can read the guidelines here.}

Have a Works-For-Me Wednesday tip you’d like to share? I’d love for you to join us! Please note that the links will close at 8 pm CST tonight, in order to keep away the spammers!

Ooh, I love your ideas! My kids (homeschooled) do school basically year-round anyway, we just take off a month or so in August. Still, you're idea inspired me… I loved playing school when I was a kid, too. I bet my kids would love the opportunity to be the teacher! I think I shall encourage some "Playing School" time. =)

  54. 54

Art is one of our favorite summer time activities! I take the paints and canvas outside, park them at the table and have them paint me a summer masterpiece. Then they can use the waterhose to clean themselves up! They always have a great time!

  58. 58

Hopefully I'll get through all these great ideas before summer is over! Hehe!

My post is about getting my kids to do something physical, educational, intellectual, and something for someone else every day!

  59. 59

THANK. YOU. Every morning my almost 6 yr old wakes up and says, "Mom, what are we doing today? Where are we going?" And as soon as she gets home from kindergarten it's, "What can I do that I've never done before?"

  60. 60

Finally got my post up and linked. I referred back to several posts I wrote last summer and there are a lot of ideas for things to do, but also tricks for beating the heat and our favorite creative thing we did last summer that solved BOTH problems – our "rain hose." Enjoy! =)

My littles are not in school just yet, 3 and 1.5 but can you believe even at this age they get bored. I am defiantly going to use some of these ideas and modify them ti fit my age group.

  63. 63

What a great idea! I think my kids are looking forward to not even hearing the word "school" though. Except my little princess who can't wait to join us for school next year. She will excietingly be starting preschool in our homeschool. I'm sure ready for a month or so off though!!!!

  64. 64

Here's our Carolina Mama Summer link: http://carolinamama1.blogspot.com/2009/06/never-bored-dr-z-and-me.html

We do that chart at home and it works wonders! Best of Luck and enjoy!

  65. 65

My kids also like to play school. My firstborn is the teacher and he spends literally hours and days setting up his school and writing lesson plans. And this was the kid that every.single.morning told me he didn't like school.

  66. 66

I am new at this, so I had to redo my link. If you could delete number 179, that would be great! Sorry about that. I know now how to do this. :)

  67. 67

Thanks for hosting. I'm looking forward to reading through all the ideas posted. Also, I've been thinking and applying your tip from last week: leave while you are still having fun. I love it!
