Wow, this one turned into a modern day "no no" issue. These are your children and you should allow them to have what "YOU" feel is safe, not what the world tells you is! You know when your child is ready for their first gifts. Don't let the organizations tell you how to feel, think, and live! That's your job as a parent. I will say to let your children experience life. Education should come with any gift of this nature, and will ensure it's used safely and properly!!!

hello I have never commented on your blog before but I am here to tellyou that I am 11 years old and I have a pocket knife and when i'm camping I carve wood and my knife is pretty sharp I've only cut myself once and it wasn't very bad .

P.S. I live insafford (A.K.A.middle of nowhere) Arizona

Unapproved gifts . . . . . I could write a whole blog on that one. Complete with a train set that said "8+ years." My son was two and I was 13 months pregnant. We took it back, ticked off a grandpa, and got him a plastic one he could do mostly himself. GAH!!!!

Be safer, sharpen the knives. Dull knives are more dangerous as they are hard to control. Don't worry, children have been using sharp knives for centuries without major amputations being reported

I once saw a podcast with some child expert that was encouraging parents to let their children do some dangerous stuff to build character and have some freedom. Playing with knives was one strong suggestion. And you thought they were just having fun…
