I Love My Dog!

I wanted to take pictures of my cat and dog dressed in some ridiculous costumes. But ChaCha would have none of that. She didn’t want a silly costume to hide her gorgeous hair:
rockin’ the mullet
But our cat came out of hiding long enough to pose:

Ike dressed like ChaCha

DIYP:Last Minute Costumes

I don’t like buying costumes, but I also don’t want to spend a lot of money making them!
For my girls, we used clothes we had and bought kitty cat accessories. My sister and Mom made my toddler’s black TuTu. Here are instructions for making them several different ways.
This kitten found her mittens:

at the Fall Festival

And my son is a Blue Lego made from recycled boxes and cups:

Here are the detailed Lego costume instructions.
Did you make a costume? Leave the link in the comments!

I’m looking forward to November and Thanksgiving…….. I love this cute, inexpensive Thanksgiving centerpiece for the table!

WFMW-Family Rules Art

I’ve seen this awesome idea all over the Internet this month! I wanted to share it here in case it’s new to you. I saw it first at The Pleated Poppy:
I think it’s not only a great piece of inexpensive art you can make for your home, it’s also a wonderful idea to establish good family rules that are positive and focus on what matters.
The supplies are just a canvas (I used 18×24, but you can use any size you want or already have), painted in a neutral background color. I printed out rules (I used a lot of hers, but added a few of my own too) on some of my favorite scrapbooking paper. I used 12×12 paper that had to be cut to fit the printer. I also googled free fonts and downloaded some fun ones.
I found it was cheaper to buy coordinating paper in a package, rather than individual sheets.
There is a lot of cutting in the project. I used modge podge to clue the slips of paper in place. I pieced the rules together and applied the glue on top also to seal it.
Here’s mine:

I love having them where we can all read them and remember what our family is all about!
Family rules works for us!

Eden Home Toy {Giveaway} 3 WINNERS!

*UPDATED* with Winners! Congrats to reader Melissa R (I emailed you!), Jen and Juice and Corinna of My Scrapbook Life!

Thank you so much for entering ladies! Yay! Thanks Eden Home!

My baby is going to be three in fifty days. FIFTY DAYS. Three years old.

I spent last week boxing up a couple of her baby toys-some to keep and some to giveaway.

And she wants a bike for her birthday, with a helmet, please.

My baby is growing up.

I’ve been looking at big girl toys, so when Eden Home asked her to review their Organic Rubberwood Animal Memory Game (from Plan Toys® ) she said yes.

She’s nice like that.

Organic Rubberwood Animal Memory Game

Product Info:

Plan Toys ® uses only wood that has been grown without fertilizers and chemicals and then makes their toys with non-formaldehyde glue and non-toxic, water based dyes so you can be sure that they are lead-free, BPA-free, chemical-free and basically as natural as can be.

Plan Toys® Com
bines learning with fun! Their toys are specially designed to enhance a child’s physical, mental and creative development without compromising safety for your child and the memory game is no exception. Consisting of 24 wooden pictures tiles with 12 different kinds of animals this great memory game tests a child’s memory to find the most animal pairs successfully to win the game. It’s great for 2-4 players and there are a variety of ways parents can use the toy with their child to learn.

My little girl loved this little bag of wooden memory pieces! I showed her how to play. She clapped when she got her a match (she cheated a little, but since she’s still two, I let her).

Then she lined up the pieces and made a “train” with them. (And I got to blow dry my hair without stopping!)

I love that these high quality wooden pieces are organic and offer hours of fun!

Eden Home offers a huge variety of products in dozens of categories, including toys. Here are some of my favorites:

Handmade Wooden Nesting Dolls - Lion
I collect nesting dolls, so I love these!
Organic Rubberwood Pirate Ship
I think my hubby, I mean, my son, would love this ship!

My hubby has taken over researching bikes for my daughter’s birthday. He loves the balance bikes, like this one:
Smart Balance Bike

Just in time for Christmas shopping, Eden Home is giving away THREE $30 gift certificates. Tell me what you like and you’ll be entered.

This giveaway ends on Thursday.

The Wet Cement

There is a small park tucked in the woods at the end of our street.
We call it The Dinosaur Park, not only because the rusty, faded slide is shaped like a T-Rex. It’s archaic.
At the beginning of summer, we received a letter stating that new park equipment was going to be installed. (My kids were thrilled for obvious reasons, but I was glad for their [current] unbroken bones).
And it arrived the first week of school.
After dinner one night, we tiptoed to the edge of the yellow caution tape and spied the shiny new slide, rock wall, swing sets and play structure. It was impressive. But it wasn’t completed.
“Look!” my daughter pointed to the swings. “There’s wet cement!”
Sure enough, the cement securing the structure to the ground was fresh.
[Now this is probably where the rule followers should stop reading.]

What are you waiting for? I know you want to see me in handcuffs, so go!

Pumpkins

We’ve been having pumpkin fun all month! And later today, we’re heading out to our church’s annual fall festival. I love October.

1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs, beaten
2/3 cup water
2 cups canned pumpkin
3 1/3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 1/2 cups granulated sugar

Preheat oven to 350.. Grease and flour four (1-pound) coffee cans

In a mixing bowl, combine oil, eggs, water and pumpkin.

In another bowl, sift together flour, salt, nutmeg, baking soda, cinnamon and sugar.  Blend together until dry ingredients are moist. Bake 1 hour and 20 minutes. We leave them in the cans and cover them with the lids after they’ve cooled.

Join in Bake at 350‘s pumpkin-flavored party the last day of October!

Be a Candle in the Corner

(I’m taking a break from THAT Family Tree Society today)
One of my long-time readers describes herself as a “simple missionary mom.” That alone humbles me. This sweet mom of four (in a foreign country, no less) is a candle in the darkness and her lone light is shining brightly.
She blogs at Moms, Ministry and More and she created a fabulous giveaway carnival that also raises funds for missionaries all over the globe who have donated unique items for the giveaway prizes. The carnival starts next week. You can read the details here or click on the button on my sidebar.
Check it out and let your candle shine!
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
P.S. If you read my newsletter, you’ve heard me mention this game, The Armor of God. We love this game! Make Family Night Fun sent it to us to try out and it’s a lot of fun. It leads to great discussions with your kids and it’s a very cool game!

We are THAT family Carnival & Blogoversary

I wanted to share a doozy of a story with you that would leave NO DOUBT that we are in fact THAT family…you know the ones. But, my life has been strangely normal lately.

Because surely my toddler discovering she could actually PUT things in the two little nose holes, also called nostrils, this week doesn’t really qualify me.  It turns out that the blue noise putty hidden in my son’s room has many uses, including but not limited to, shoving them into your brain, followed by tiny bits of toilet paper.
Her snot is still blue.
And while I’m retrieving paper from my daughter’s nose with tweezers, it’s probably completely normal for my out-of-town hubby to call from the airport to let me know he found a lost sippy cup in his travel bag. He discovered it because the sour milk EXPLODED from the pressure of air travel, causing many to question the foul odor. Yep, just an ordinary day.
Every week I receive emails from other moms staying “We are THAT family too.” I’ve laughed and taken comfort (at your expense, of course) reading of your embarrassing and real life moments. I think there’s a little bit of THAT family in all of us.  It seemed fitting to provide a central gathering place to share our moments. And since I’m celebrating my 2 year blogoversary this week, I giving away TEN prizes to TEN carnival linkers!
Most days, I feel good about who we are and where we’re heading as a family. But I’ll be the first to admit, sometimes when my toddler lets out her ear-piercing scream or we end up in the emergency room more than once in a weekend, I want a disguise!

There. That’s better. Hmm…..I wonder who that woman is?
So my neighbor, friend and baker-extradonaire, Bake at 350 is providing a Grand Prize for TWO lucky participants with a dozen (each) mustache-shaped cookies!!
Here we are incognito:
And, since it’s my party and I can do what I want, I’m not stopping there!
One lucky winner will win a custom necklace from The Vintage Pearl: ($40 value):
One lucky winner will win a gorgeous Life pitcher for your sweet tea (my sweet tea taste even better is this delicious piece of art from Dayspring: ($25 value):
One lucky winner will win a $100 Blogger blog design (The Works) by my friend Jo-Lynne owner of DCRDesign!!
One lucky winner will win a $25 gift certificate to Back 40 Life, an adorable vinyl lettering store.
Scalloped Initial Wall Vinyl Decal
Three lucky winners will win customized holiday cards (jpeg form, you can print them at places like Sam’s, Costco, WalMart, etc) from the lovely gal at Butterfly Sparks! ($15 value, each)
Select card :: Purchase below :: Email photos & wording :: Voila!
And one lucky winner will have their choice of a set (5) binky leashes of 2 sets of mitten clips from Mommie of 4 Munchkins
Lot of Five (5) Pacifier Clips Binky Holders NUK MAM Soothie Gumdrop Avent and More

Whew! Happy 2nd blogging day to me! (MckLinky will close at midnight Thursday night and all winners will be announced on Friday! Make sure you check back in!)

It’s your turn. I can’t wait to read your stories (if you’ve written a post in the past, link it up)!
P.S. The 30,000th comment is getting closer and closer!!!

WFMW-Ten Ways to Please Your Husband

I thought I’d get a little personal and meddle in your business this week. Marriage is hard work. Just look at the divorce rate in America.
My marriage is better when I am dedicated to making it better.  Here are some simple, yet thoughtful ways to please your husband:
  1. Call him in the middle of the day and thank him for working so hard to provide for your family (even if you work too, men really feel the pressure and responsibility).
  2. Make his favorite meal or wear a favorite outfit.
  3. Hug him a little too long.
  4. Pray for him.
  5. Give him your attention when he gets home from work.
  6. Hide a note in his lunch or in his glovebox.
  7. Text or email him just to say ‘I love you.’
  8. Tell him he’s a great Dad (even if he could be better).
  9. Do something impulsive (email me for suggestions, this is a family blog).
  10. Give him some time to himself. (send him fishing or hunting or send him to the garage without him having to ask).
Guy readers (all 5 of you), what am I leaving out?

(I’m celebrating my 2nd year of blogging with a carnival tomorrow. You can read about it here. There will be more than TEN amazing prizes for participants! I hope you’ll join me!)

Scribbles n Such {Giveaway}

*UPDATED with WINNERS* Congratulations to Let’s Make a Difference and Stephanie of Team Babetz

I’m thrilled to introduce y’all to a neat little shop created and run by two moms: Scribbles n Such. The adorable stationary items are hand painted and reproduced on a four color press so they don’t lose the brush-stroke look.
These sweet gals sent me a box full of things to try.
I’m keeping my to do list on this great notepad (love the size)
and I’m using this fantastic menu planner to keep track of my E-Mealz (my favorite part is the perforated sidebar that holds my grocery list! I just tear it off for my trip to the store.)
I also decked out my toddler’s back pack and lunchbox for Mother’s Day Out with these adorable bag tags:
Scribbles n Such has cute gift wrap, hand painted cards for every occasion, calendars, stationary and more!
Today they are offering TWO readers a $30 gift certificate EACH.
Go have a look and leave a comment (for your entry) on your favorite line. Scribbles n Such is letting us vote on our favorites so they know what’s most popular.

Pain Management

*important announcement below!
So, you may remember I have pain in my neck from a damaged disc. I chickened out on surgery to fuse my vertebra because the doctor would be using a knife and it would hurt. And yo, there would be blood.
I opted to go the moderate route of medication, Cortisone shots, physical therapy and sweet tea (okay, the sweet tea part is mine).
I’d like to talk about muscle relaxers now. I like them. That is all. Except do not take them right before you pick up your kids from school. Or you might bring home an extra child. Or a dog that looks like a child. And you will see little pink bunnies everywhere.
I’ve had two Cortisone shots in the neck in the last month. I had relief from pain for five days after the first one and as I’m typing this, I’ve been pain free for a week and a half! Can I get a booya?
Because of the location of the injection, they treat this just like surgery. Twice now, I’ve not eaten after midnight (because Little Debbie snacks at 11:59 PM don’t count), been stuck with three i.v.’s (last time the nurse missed the vein, so I got the buy one bruise, get one free deal), and been wheeled on a gurney WIDE AWAKE into the operating room filled with waiting medical professionals.  Both times, they had me climb onto the table face down and they talked about what they were having for lunch. HELLO? Number one, I’m hungry. Number two, can you knock me out already? Or hold me?
Those moments in the OR are very surreal. This is such a minor procedure, but I’m telling you, there’s just something about that sterile environment. Reminds me of home. Ha!
Seriously, though, I find myself praying really hard in my mind please don’t let me die, please don’t let me die, because I have oodles of faith, apparently.
The other pretty amazing thing is it’s over just like that *snap of the fingers* and they don’t want to let you finish your nap. The 14 1/2 minutes after the procedure is the best sleep of my life. WHY WON’T THEY LET ME NAP? Before I know it, an elderly volunteer with perfectly coiffed hair is pushing my wheelchair into the sunlight and talking about the weather.
Physical therapy isn’t what I thought it would be either. Because they want me to do stretches and exercises with a large yellow rubber band. I’ve popped myself twice with that thing and it hurt more than my neck pain. I guess they didn’t get the memo that my gym membership expired.
I’m the youngest patient by about 47 years, but I like that. My knee gets patted and I love talking with elderly people. Unless they cut in front of me in. I have to draw the line somewhere.
I’m not sure if the therapist really understands what’s wrong with my neck. Because for weeks now, she applies pressure WITH ONE FINGER, not hard enough to squash an ant, counts to 10 and says, “Do you feel better now?”
I want to laugh hysterically every time. But I don’t, I say, “Oh, yes, much better.”  Which is true, because laughter does the heart good. I keep going back because of the traction machine. It’s a modern day torture device that stretches my neck and I LOVE it.
Nearly as much as the muscle relaxers.
*Note: I am on the lowest dose of the only non-addictive muscle relaxer and I only take it as needed. Or if I want to see those bunnies. JUST KIDDING, mom! And since I’m not feeling that great, I’m sticking with chicken soup and Tylenol.
P.S. Some time this week I will pass the ONE MILLION mark on blog visits (just in time for my 2 year blogaversary this week!!) The counter is at the very bottom of my blog. If someone can capture 1,000,000 with a screenshot and email it to me, I’ll send  a SURPRISE GIFT BOX of some of my favorite holiday things (more than $60.00 value!!). The first person to email me the picture wins! kristenwrites@yahoo.com

Rest Stop

My little girl woke up with a hoarse voice this morning. And a special attitude.
I woke up with The Headache (I’m hoping it’s not the flu).
So, we’re taking a sick day.
Are y’all staying healthy?

THAT Family Tree Society-Issue 58

Picture of the Week:

The Week in Review: Sibling rivalry, who us?

Introduction into The Society:The Miller Mix!

1.    Tell us a little about your blog (name/reason why you blog):

When I first started blogging, I was a single mom with an adopted, toddler son. Then my boyfriend (now husband) entered the picture. And then a cat, and then a dog, and then a baby. Most people think of their families as a unit. I see mine as a mix — of personalities, of DNA, of needs and wants. Thus, the Miller Mix was born.
yle="margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline- line-height: 1.2em; color:initial;">
2.    How long have you blogging?

At the Miller Mix since 2005, before that at Diaryland since 2001.

3.    How would you define THAT family?

For me, THAT family is the one that breaks the mold, that stands out in a crowd (often for all the wrong reasons). Around here, we are THAT family because our son is biologically my nephew and my husband’s cousin — making us related in a very hillbilly way. THAT family is the one strangers come up to in public saying “bless your heart” about something – for example, when my son is vibrating in his seat and my daughter is channeling the evil within, or when my husband insists on wearing his Volunteer orange from head to foot because it’s game day and who cares that we live in Tarheel and Wolfack country, or when I try to avoid the judgemental glances when my daughter pulls out all of her hairbows and kicks off her shoes in the middle of the grocery store while whining for gummy snacks. You know THAT family — they just don’t behave like “normal” people do.
4.    When did you discover you were a part of THAT family?

I think I was born into THAT family, but I knew starting my own branch was inevitable when I was in grad school and decided to return to the south to raise my sister’s child while she recovered from a serious substance addiction. Then I fell for the best friend of my ex (and cousin to my sister’s ex/the father of my newly adopted baby) when he returned from living on the side of a mountain in east Tennessee. I really had no hope for a family other than THAT one, did I? Some might call us Jerry Springer, but we’re just THAT family.

5.    Where can we find your blog?

DIYP-A Mirror on a Mirror

I have this plane jane (no offense jane) large standard mirror in my master bathroom. Ever since I saw The Nester hang a mirror over a mirror, I’ve been hunting for a large round one to hang over the mirror I have.
But those suckers are expensive.
But at a garage sale the other day, I found this mirror for TEN BUCKS. It was pretty ornate and gaudy gold, but it had promise. Plus, did I mention TEN BUCKS?
(here it is leaning casually against my bathroom mirror)

(do you know HOW HARD it is to take a picture of a mirror without also capturing a body part?)

I debated on paint color. Initially I thought ivory, but my cabinets are white, so I went with chocolate spray paint since  I have a lot of bronze accents. I taped off the glass with the comic section, so I could multi task and read the funnies:
I found this fancy hook at Hobby Lobby for $3 and my hubby hung wire from the back of the mirror to the hook. Don’t you like the color better now?
In order to hide the wire, I just tucked some pretty ribbon around it:
I really love the way it turned out. The mirror makes my whole bathroom look unique!

(I took this picture standing on the corner of the tub. On my tippy toes. But I’m not going to tell you how many retakes there were!)

Nail It Down

Over the summer, I asked about sibling rivalry on my forum
Our family has a fair share of normal spats. I’ll admit that the squabbling gets on my nerves and I now understand why it drove my parents crazy too.
In the book, Making Children Mind without Losing Yoursthe author Kevin Leman, suggests letting your kids fight because they are actually learning to cooperate with each other. He suggests sending them outside if you can’t stand the racket and instructing them to fight. Usually they just stand there without much to say. He also explains, it can become a screaming match and maybe even physical but kids will learn quickly that fighting doesn’t pay off, there will be consequences and that it hurts to fight.
Okay, so I’m not totally there. But I have been sending them outside and trying to back off some. (My hubby and I do peek out the window and we’ve thought about making small wagers on who will hit first).
I noticed that even when they weren’t fighting, there was some belittling going on. I watched one of my children take more a bullying role and the other suffered.
Someone shared an idea in my forum from the book, Creative Correction by Lisa Whelchel: When your child hurts the other with their words, rather than punish them, send them outside and ask them to hammer a nail into a piece of wood. Don’t offer any other explanation or punishment. Be consistent and do this for a couple of weeks. When you feel the time is right (or the board is full), ask the child to removed the nails with a the claw of the hammer.
Explain that when we apologize, it’s just like removing the nails.
And then ask: What is left on the board?
Answer: holes.
We can apologize for our mean words, but they leave marks.
This proved to be a very powerful illustration in our home and not just for our kids.  If I had to name one of my top weaknesses (there are many choices), this would be it: controlling my tongue. So it was a good lesson for me too.
My kids love each other deeply and I know that this showed them the power of their words.
Both good and bad.
Psalm 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”
Do your kids fight? How do you handle it? Because. THERE ARE DAYS…..
P.S. I was notified that my blog was named as one of the Top 50 Diversion blogs. I’m pretty sure it was a mistake, but it made me smile. Thanks for reading what I write. It would be lonely without you!

WFMW: Making Your House Smell Good

I love for my house to smell of baked bread, pumpkin pie and cinnamon rolls. It’s so much better than the aroma of dog, Eggo waffles and sweaty children.
But I would have to actually cook that stuff.
I found a much easier way and it’s a lot less fattening. I like to keep simmering potpourri on my back burner.
Here’s how to make it:
1 jar of cinnamon sticks-broken
2 or 3 slices of orange peel (if you have it)
1 jar of cloves
1 jar of allspice
Mix into airtight container. Add two Tablespoons of mixture to every 1/2 cup of water.
(Make sure the water doesn’t simmer away. I just throw more water on if it does until the fragrance is gone and then I start over.)
What works for you?
Thank you for joining me for WFMW! {You can read the guidelines here.}

Becoming a Mother

I’d like to apologize to a select group of readers for an oversight in yesterday’s post.

In my attempt to be light-hearted in sharing my daughter’s video, I wish I’d rephrased and included women who are struggling with infertility, struggling with becoming a mother. I should have clearly stated that we don’t have the power to ultimately decide on how many children we have, or if we have any. This decision is God’s because He is the author of life.

Please forgive me. I’ve walked the dark road you travel. I know the mourning you feel when your dream dies again each month. I know the grief of miscarriage.

I know the desire to become a Mother.

After around 2 years of marriage, my hubby and I, youth and children’s pastors at the time, decided to start our family. In the early months, even the first year, there wasn’t much disappointment. We were young, working and enjoying our time together. But when months turned to years, the disappointment turned to pain.

We didn’t have insurance that covered infertility treatment, but we decided to pursue it anyway. It didn’t take long after rounds of fertility drugs (which made me hysterically odd by the way), procedures and office visits to drain any extra money we had.

I learned to hate Mother’s Day. I refused to attend baby showers. I rolled my eyes every time someone told me to relax and uttered a sarcastic quip when unwanted advice was given (a coffee enema, seriously?) I wept bitterly when a girl in our youth group got pregnant without being married. I was a mess.

I struggled with my identity. I felt like a failure.

My infertility consumed me. I lost myself in my journey to become a mother.

We decided to pursue adoption. We found a private Christian agency who offered pastors a discount. We had physicals, took HIV tests, and set out to prove that we would be good parents. We scraped together the initial fees, created a book to entice some young woman and we waited.

It was in those months of waiting (again), that God began to chip away at my bitterness. He lovingly reminded me that He was there in the midst of my pain and the unknown. It was during that time that He gave me the assurance that one day I would become a mother, either thru natural means or by the miracle of adoption.

I’ll never forget the day we got a call from someone across the United States telling us about a three week old baby girl who needed a home.

I took a pregnancy test the same day. After years, it was positive for the first time in my life.

The adoption fell thru and I began the journey of pregnancy.

Years later I faced a miscarriage, a high risk pregnancy, a premature birth—all out of my control.

But that’s what it’s about, isn’t it? Yielding the control to the One
who controls it all.

For me, becoming a mother wasn’t easy. I don’t know why it was hard for me. I don’t know why it’s so hard for you. But I do know that you are not alone.

Mrs. Lisa Leonard emailed me awhile back asking if I’d like to give away TWO of her new necklaces.
I had to really think about it, for ZERO seconds. Because y’all. Her jewelry is AMAZING.
She sent me (disclosure: for free) one of her new designs to keep and wear forever. The important people call it a review. I call it my new favorite necklace.
Lisa sent me her new Family Crest necklace and I love it!! It’s so unique and classy. I feel like such a grown up when I wear it!
When my hubby saw it around my neck, he said, “She really outdid herself with that design!” And everywhere I go, someone asks me about it!
(He also thinks it’s really funny to snap pictures of me when I’m not looking!)
This necklace is striking:

THAT Family Tree Society-Issue 57

Picture of the Week:

The Week in Review:We had a great visit with grandparents! We spent a big part of Saturday putting the world back together. It was a tough job, but somebody had to do it!

Introduction into The Society: Good, True and Beautiful–WELCOME to the fam!

1.    Tell us a little about your blog (name/reason why you blog):

My name is Sharon and I blog at  ="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline- line-height: 1.2em; color:initial;">Good, True and Beautiful, a small corner of the blogosphere that captures the crazy thoughts that run through my mind.  It was gonna be either blogging or therapy, and blogging was cheaper.  When I think about it, I’m amazed at how sharing little pieces of my life leads to friendships and buddies all around the internet.  So, now I’m addicted to blogging — guess I’ll need that therapy after all.

2.     How long have you blogging?

I wrote my first post on Feb 3, 2009 (that also happens to be my husband’s birthday – it’s the gift that keeps on giving).  Initially I started a blog thinking that it might be a way to make extra money for our family – since I’m now consistently earning in the low double-digits, we can all agree that it was a real savvy business move.   I’m good like that.

3.    How would you define THAT family?

THAT family has the ability to laugh at itself.  I think there is something contagious about not taking yourself too seriously.  It certainly has helped me get through some of the rough patches of motherhood.  I mean, no one tells you about the re-hydrating power of raisins – you just have to realize that joy for yourself.

4.    When did you discover you were a part of THAT family?

I started getting a suspicious on the day when our hot water heater broke and I had to prepare for lunch with my pastor.  And my thoughts drifted here a time or two as I was watching an episode of The Waltons while eating my chocolate ice cream (with rainbow sprinkles).  But the truth was undeniable when I had to confront the  rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.goodtrueandbeautiful.com/2009/09/my-cancer-sniffing-son.html" style="outline-style: none; outline-width: initial; outline-color: initial; line-height: 1.2em; color: blue; text-decoration: underline; ">cancer-sniffing powers of my toddler.  Of course, when I confessed it to my sister she said “I could have told you when you asked for the bread maker.”  I guess I’ve been in denial.

5.     Where can we find your blog?

Head on over to Good, True and Beautiful  but be warned:  my impeccable sense of fashion might be a bit overwhelming.

DIYP-Lighted Pumpkin Topiary

Have y’all seen the artificial, carve-able pumpkins?
They look so real:

I waited until they were 50% off and bought three.
I saw this really cute idea on the DIY network: a lighted pumpkin topiary.
There are even tools to carve the fake pumpkins. My arms got their first work out in quite awhile opening up these babies:
I traced and cut leaf shapes in one:

To make ‘stars’, I drilled holes with a drill [insert manly grunt here]:
I cut a hole in each pumpkin at the bottom and the top (except for the smallest one on top). I then ran a strand of mini lights, hanging them on little cup hooks I lightly screwed into the foam pumpkin skin.
Gluing the pumpkins together was tricky. Hot glue ended up being the best. I finally found a use for an urn I bought nearly a year ago (80% off)!
I love it, especially at night!

Now tell me you don’t love it!
Click here for more detailed instructions.
Check out Kimba’s for more great projects!
