The Next Pioneer Woman

My twin sister’s daughter, my oldest niece, is fifteen and darling:

I love this girl. But don’t let those faded jeans, pulled back hair and dirty boots fool you, she’s been more fashionable than me since she was nine. She’s a city girl, but she’s spent the last year talking about raising a cow. Her mother was concerned about um, cow patties and asked if she could go with us to my in-laws farm for Memorial Day.

So, we did just that:

My hubby and father-in-law didn’t waist a minute showing the city girl how to BAND a calf (also known as castrating. Ick).

And then I’ll let you guess what they told her……….

She got her hands dirty with vaccinating, fly tagging and branding. We tried to talk her into doing a pregnancy test by hand (her dad offered us $20), but she didn’t really need the money.

By the end of the weekend, she was sporting a farmer’s tan and a love for the farm.

My apologies to my sister.

(Cute, even with our eyes closed, huh?)

At least now she can appreciate where her food comes from! Great post. Love the boots. Your blog is so adorable!

several years ago I was allowed the luxory of taking care of a friends calves and bottle feed them why they were out of town. I took a teen with me one day. I convinced them that after you bottle feed the calves you have to stick your fingers in there mouths to burp them. they did not catch on even after i took pictures. I love it.

Her faces are so funny! I love it! I miss my family’s farm…I never actually did work, but it was so nice being there. Looks like she enjoyed it too!

Her face is hysterical. I have the same feeling about people eating calf nuts. Ick.

Looking forward to meeting you at Relevant!

Way to go Abby! Got love the “farm fresh smell”. If you can stomach that, you can do ANYTHING! By the way, In Wyoming (my husbands’s home state), they have a “happening” event every year and the WHOLE town — all 6,000 of them — comes out for this event. It’s called the “TESTICAL FESTIVAL”— no joke!!!!!

I love that post! Great pictures too. My daughter wants to live on a farm too and frankly, I still want that for myself. Still trying to convince hubby we need land, wide open spaces, and freedom not to mention, a few chickens, and maybe a few sheep and some cows or a horse or two :-)

I am fairly new to your site and can I just tell you how hilarious this post was??!!! Her face was priceless in those pictures…Cool that you have a twin, too!! I think you should submit this blog post to Ree Drummond, the Pioneer Woman herself! She’d find it hysterical!! :)

I love your blog-your perspective on life and family and your Faith. Because of your blog and a few others, my hubby and our three boys and I sponsor a boy in Kenya. I love him…It’s been the best thing for my heart…It’s funny how you think you’re blessing others and YOU end up being the one blessed by them. Anyway, thanks for blogging-I know you’re changing people’s hearts as you do it and have so much fun with it. It’s great!

OK, um, if the cow has to be in that narrow thingy for a vaccine, what sort of contraption do they have to be in for BANDING? They don’t really just hold still for that sort of thing, do they? They certainly can’t think it’s a good thing to have a human reach down there. I’m totally intrigued about how this is done. They put cats and dogs to sleep to do it… and a cow just stands there? I must be missing something. But I’m sure I’d have that exact same expression on my face!

      Chick Hatcher,
Well, the side comes down on the narrow gate, but actually calves are pretty small, so once the got it in the shoot, they just followed him in and did the deed. The little calves don’t even cry. It’s really just like a small rubberband and doesn’t hurt to put on. Eventually, it all just falls off. Lovely word picture, huh?

It looks like you niece had an eye-opening experience on the farm. Great photos. It’s great that she wasn’t turned off by the down and dirty workings of the farm. She may have found her calling. BTW-I love her boots.

  20. 21

Oh my word…I’ve been driving my husband crazy about raising cattle, but after seeing just about the same thing your niece did, I nixed it! Sheep are next on the list. LOL

This is momma to the lovely farm girl in the above said post! Her darling boots were purchased last year at a Gap outlet. She had a blast at the farm and boy did she have stories to tell! Can I just say that farm clothes are stinky and her socks will never look the same!
