Here are your random numbers:

19	211	156

We’re in full school mode in Texas. But you know that already because you saw THE BAGS under my eyes, eh?

I’ve actually been in bed by 10:30 pm every night! But that’s because I’ve mastered sleeping standing up.

Here are a couple of tips that help get our mornings going:

  • We make lunches the night before
  • We lay out clothes for the next day and make sure backpacks are ready
  • We try to have a quick devotion over breakfast-makes everyone’s day run so much smoother!
  • We pray with our kids to have a great day
  • We do homework, go over tests, sign papers, etc. in the afternoon, so our evenings are free to be together
  • We put important dates in ONE place: a family calendar

How do you make your school days run smoothly?

Today, three random WFMW participants will be win ($15-20 value each) a set of Dayspring’s awesome school supplies.

Here’s a sampling:

What works for you?

Music for the Soul {Giveaway}

*UPDATED with WINNERS* Congrats to the Grand Prize Winner: Jennifer of A Beautiful Calling and the following random commenters one Britt Nicole’s awesome new CD: Texas Carlisle Family, Angie, Troop Petrie, Pam (pamwalkrey530@gmail.com) and jenleahlynn (ctstrong@juno.com)

My soul needs music. When I’m feeling down and stressed and my heart is occupied with clutter, worship lifts me up. It stirs me.

She had me at the word Africa.

I love this song by Britt Nicole. I cried while I watched this video. God is asking our family to walk on the water (I’ll be sharing more in September):

It’s about stepping out and being who God has called you to be and not being afraid of that,” states Britt. “I believe when we look different and carry something different, people are going to see that and want it too. They are going to see the love of Christ in us, and they’ll desire that. I believe people will come to know God if we as Christians will do that.”-Britt Nicole

I love this music!! It’s spunky and fun and deep. She draws from the well that is Jesus. She’s music I want my daughter’s humming!

Britt Nicole’s newest album, Acoustic, has her five biggest songs, including Walk on Water, and a new release.

Today, I’m giving away a GRAND PRIZE that includes: a custom-designed Britt Nicole T-shirt and Starbucks Coffee Mug and the CD. Plus, FIVE others will also win Acoustic, her latest CD.

Leave a comment telling me what worship/Christian music does for you and that will be your entry.

This giveaway ends on Thursday.

A Holy War

The other day in the car, it went like this:

My oldest daughter was singing softly a new song from church….”My God is great-er…My God is great-er”

I looked up from driving and glanced in the rearview mirror. I was happy to hear my firstborn sing such a lovely song. It made me proud. It made me think: I MUST BE DOING A GOOD JOB.

A second little girl’s voice joined in the chorus. In sweet , clear lyrics, she echoed her older sister… “My God is greater…”

This went on for a minute or two. I was bursting with pride at my cherubs daughters.

And then in a swift moment, without ANY WARNING, the song of the younger become… “MY God is greater than YOURS…” and there was a competitive edge to her voice.

To which her sister responded…”No, MY God is GREATER than YOUR GOD!”

And then it downward spiraled into an all out WAR of who’s God was greater.

Yours or Mine.

The end.

</holy moment>

P.S. At some point I should probably explain it’s THE SAME GOD, huh?

If You Can’t Laugh At Yourself, Laugh at Other People {Giveaway}

*Updated with Winner* Congratulations to reader Heidi H. (mowerman3@gmail.com)

So. About last night.

I laughed so hard my cheeks hurt and my sides ached. In the roar of the crowd, I could hear a woman laughing uncontrollably, slapping her knee and wheezing. It was me. It felt so good.

Tim Hawkins is a Christian comedian with an edge. He’s like a clean version of Larry the Cable guy. He’s quirky, off-the-wall and absolutely hilarious. He’s well-known for his YouTube song parodies (just type in his name on YouTube), but his stand-up act is my favorite.

Although, his Chick Fil A song is like a lullaby to me.

His jokes about the church, marriage and parenting are so funny because they are based on truth.

Some of my favorite lines of the night:

  • The end time is near. We know this because of the invention of the Snuggie.
  • Churches that are non-denominational are just Baptist with a cool website.
  • Thesaurus prayers- people who pray like this, “Dear God, please lead, guide, direct, show us the way”
  • What is up with people who squeeze your hand at the end of a prayer? KNOCK IT OFF. You’re freaking us out!
  • The Duggars need a hobby.
  • [On Twitter] No one gives two twits about what you tweet.
  • You know you’re a parent when you end your sentences in  LOUD ADVERBS “Come here quickly. Get over here pronto. Obey me now.”
  • Tim ended the night with a song about “if you’ve tinkled (from laughing), I’ve done my job here.” And then, he thew out DEPENDS UNDERGARMENTS to the audience!

We stood in line and had Mr. Hawkins autograph his latest DVD. It’s 2 hours of hilarity. I said, “I’m giving this one away on my blog.” He said, “What’s the name of your blog?”

“We are THAT family,” I answered.

He laughed, “we are that family, too!”

Aren’t we all??

(sorry about the blurry shot-Have you ever tried to take a photo with a comedian? They don’t stand very still!)

So. Up for grabs: An autographed copy of Tim Hawkins newest comedy DVD, “I’m No Rockstar.” It’s two hours full of videos, jokes and songs. GREAT FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT! It’s sure to make you laugh, even cry, maybe reach for the Depends!

Have you ever heard a song or comedy act by Tim Hawkins? Is this your first intro? Leave a comment and tell me  your favorite thing he does to be entered.

You can shop here.

Frenemy

The Cat Vs. The Dog

Every night, after we tuck our kids in bed, my hubby and I settle in and watch our dog and cat try and coexist. It’s hilarious.

Until this happens:

(I heard a crash LITERALLY 5 minutes before I hit publish on this post!)

Friend+enemy=Frenemy

“Frenemy” is a portmanteau of “friend” and “enemy” which can refer to either an enemy disguised as a friend or to a partner who is simultaneously a competitor and rival.

A Bed, A Bag of Rice & A Business

His name is Francios (said in my best French accent which sorta sounds like fancy Texan).

He’s six:

He’s one of the Compassion children our family sponsors. He lives in Togo, Africa. In the last six months, he’s written us five letters!

God blessed our family with some extra and we were able to send Francios a family gift a couple of months ago. Compassion allows you to send a financial gift every year to your Compassion children.

Last week, when my daughter opened a Compassion envelope, she gasped. I could tell it wasn’t an ordinary (although always special) letter.  This photograph was accompanied with a letter of thanks from Francios’ family:

With our family gift (small by American standards), this precious family bought there first bed! (There are 5 in the family) They bought rice and supplies and most importantly, they started a business! (selling used clothes)

One of my favorite things about Compassion is they don’t just help people out of poverty, they give families the tools to help themselves. They meet with the family when a family gift is given and help them decide how to spend it best.

This financial gift -that we’ll never miss- might have changed Francios’ family.

But it changed mine more.

__________

Rescuing children from poverty is one of the most inspiring and beautiful experiences our family has ever shared together. It’s never too late to sponsor a child. You can do it today.

WFMW: Brown Sugar Tip

I love brown sugar. I eat it for fun. Just kidding. ahem.

I hate when my brown sugar gets lumpy and turns as hard as a rock.

My mother-in-law gave me a terra cotta Brown Sugar Bear to put into my bag of brown sugar. She said it would keep it soft. I had my doubts, but it really works.

I love this little $3  bear. It really keeps brown sugar from turning hard and I just transfer it to a new bag after it’s opened.

It works for me!

Don’t forget NEXT WEEK is a themed edition of WFMW: Share a back-to-school tip! AND, three WFMW participants will win some cool back-to-school goodies!!

Glory Haus {Giveaway}

*UPDATED with WINNERS* Congratulations to random commenters Deanne Riddle (email: deannemk@yahoo.com) and Life’s Good Be Happy

It’s sort of a long [home decor] story.

But, I love stories don’t you?

For months, lo years, I kept seeing this eye-catching, beautiful inspirational art popping up in different places: the tiny gift store at Family Camp,

a random shop along the beach,

in a friend’s home.

It took me awhile to put two-and-two together. Because I’m quick like that. It dawned on me that one company, called Glory Haus was producing the art I had fallen in love with (but had yet to own).

Until now:

When I made the epiphany and discovered that Glory Haus was a growing, amazing company owned by moms, I knew I had to share them with you.

They sent me this beautiful piece of art to hang. I cried when I read it:

Glory Haus is giving away TWO $75 gift certificates today on my blog! Visit their HUGE catalog, and tell me what you love in the comments.

This giveaway ends on Friday.

I WILL NOT CRY. I WILL NOT CRY. I WILL NOT CRY. I WILL NOT CRY.

We always take pictures on the first day of school. Her are the last three years:

I’ll be adding a new picture for another new school year (2010), in the morning.

I tucked a special back-to-school survival bag into each of my kid’s backpack.

All I need is Kleenex to get me thru the day.

Is it just me, or is this growing up thing, hard?

P.S. I’d like to point out a few things you might notice in the above collage: 1. yes, those are fall decorations in the background of 2009. WHAT WAS I THINKING? It was August and over 100 degrees everyday. 2. In 2008, my 1 year old is wearing a leash. You do what you gotta do. 3. YES, I KNOW: my kids are adorable!

*UPDATED*

School Year: 2010

5th grade

3rd grade

Preschool

Do you cry at the start of a new year?

P.S. I only choked up once this morning (and that had more to do with the highly developed, french-manicured girl at the lockers!)

WFMW: Make a Family Memory Box

I can hardly believe that summer is nearly over!

If it weren’t for the HEAT, I’d let summer stay forever. But the heat index of 111 the past few days, makes me glisten.

We’ve made some pretty great memories this summer and I want to treasure them.

Last summer, in one of my DIY posts, I showed my readers an old printer’s tray, turned-unique-table. I got it for $10 and wasn’t sure what I would do with it.

Here’s a peek at it:

Several of my readers suggested turning into a memory box to store trinkets and treasures from family moments.

We’ve done just that with our summer memories:

It’s one of my most-prized possessions: every ticket stub, seashell and special rock is a precious memory. Now that we are geocaching, we have a place to store our caches! My kid’s love looking at it and talking about the memories.

A family memory box works for us!

Here are the WFMW guidelines.

Last week, I had a party.

It was a gathering of friends and family. We sat around and talked about these women:

I love stories like these. I love world-changers.

Today, I’m giving away this gorgeous 3-strand necklace ($36):

And this pretty bright green multi-strand bracelet ($16):

Visit 31 Bits

When Prayer Requests Go Wrong

My hubby and I have been teaching Sunday School for a couple of years. We teach 5, 6, and 7 year olds.

The lesson is usually taught by my hubby and I tackle the crafts every week.

But I live for “prayer request time.” But don’t let my holiness deceive you, some weeks it’s the best laugh I get.

Because 5, 6 and 7 year old pray about everything. And I mean, everything.

I’ve been jotting down some of the especially hilarious heart-felt ones.

It starts out like this: “Do y’all have any prayer requests this week?”

Every hand shoots up in the air. We go around the table, one-by-one. We pray for scratches and scabs. We lift up sick grandparents and broken toys. And sometimes, we pray for:

  • “The freckle on my butt”
  • “I was late for church because my parents were fighting in the car.”
  • “The birthday party I went to yesterday was fun. Except for the disgusting cake. Can we pray about that?”
  • “My dad says bad words like _______”
  • “My mom called my brother a dork. And that’s very bad.”
  • “I don’t like my sister.”
  • My pet hamster has ring worm.

We thought about moving on to another class since our kids aren’t in ours anymore.

But I can’t give up prayer request time.

Growing Up Too Fast

[This is a post for moms about their daughters]

Have y’all noticed how early girls are hitting puberty?

I’m not just talking about how quickly our society is pushing them to grow up with inappropriate fashion and romance story lines on the Disney Channel, (that’s all true, but for another post) I’m talking about their baby bodies changing too quickly.

I thought nine and ten was young, but apparently, according to this health article I read yesterday, it’s happening to seven and eight year olds! According to the study, 18% of Caucasian girls and 43% of African-American girls are going into early puberty by age 8!

“For the 11-year old that looks like she’s 15 or 16, adults are going to interact with her like she’s 15 or 16, but so are her peers,” Biro said. Girls who develop early “look physically older,” he said. “It doesn’t mean that they’re psychologically or socially more mature.”

Obesity and diet are  likely the culprits, but not necessarily. What do you think it causing it?

My hubby and I recently watched a couple of documentaries on America’s food industry. Oh my! Not only did it turn our stomachs, it was very eye-opening. Now, I am NOT a health nut (insert sweet tea here). I love sugar and Southern food and no one has ever mistaken me for a Nutritionist.

I’m not about to jump on some bandwagon, but I do care about my kid’s health and I certainly want to hold off puberty until my children are mentally ready for it. For the last month, we’ve made a concentrated effort and have substituted fresh veggies/fruit for canned,  grass-fed beef for corn-fed and hormone-free chicken.

I think it’s sad that it’s more expensive to eat healthier. And I don’t know if this is the answer to stopping early puberty, but it’s worth a try.

What do you think is causing this and what can we do about it?

WFMW: Teaching Kids Phone Numbers

After 6 years with the same home phone number, I changed it.

(It’s a long story which involves me in a panic, overreacting and changing it and then telling my family about it. But those are just details).

There weren’t any numbers left in our area, so we even got a new area code, TWO months ago.

I’m the only one who knows the number. It’s been very hard for my kids to learn.  I saw this idea in the latest edition of Family Fun Magazine and I think it’s going to work!

Beaded bracelets with our new number (to wear only at home):

It works for us!

What works for you?

[Back to School] Do-It-For-Others Project: Shoes

School starts in our part of Texas two weeks from tomorrow!

We have ONE thing left on our back-to-school shopping list: new shoes.

We’re using last year’s backpacks and we brushed up wardrobes at our local kid’s resale shop.

But shoes? I like my kids to each have a new pair. But it isn’t their only pair: They have church shoes, Crocs, flip flops and play tennis shoes.

Recently, I read in a magazine that the average woman has 19 (nineteen!) pairs of shoes.

I can’t help but think of the estimated 300 million people around the world who will wake up tomorrow without a pair of shoes to protect their feet from injury and disease.

Several months ago, I learned that one of my readers from the United States moved to South Africa with her husband with one goal: to provides shoes for people who didn’t have any by starting Samaritan’s Feet South Africa. I was so impressed by their simple goal and profound leap of faith that I decided WE MUST HELP THEM.

Guilt aside, is it really right that I have racks of shoes in my closet while so many people have none?

I’m happy to announce that our newest DIFO project is collecting new shoes for the people of South Africa! The shoe drive starts today and runs thru the end of September.

Dirty feet Pictures, Images and Photos

There are several ways for you to be a part of this shoe drive:

  • Shop for and mail a new pair of shoes to the address below
  • Order a pair of shoes from an online store and have it shipped to the address below (see online deals below)
  • Donate (tax deductible) a financial gift for a pair of shoes here

What will your donation do?

Samaritan’s Feet South Africa is working to make a difference in the lives of kids and adults in need of shoes throughout sub-Saharan Africa. At our Shoes of Hope Distributions, we partner with local organizations, churches and schools to achieve three specific goals:

  1. We TOUCH each person, by washing their feet.
  2. We TEACH each person a message of hope.
  3. We TREAT each person to a new pair of shoes.

Proof My Hubby is Nicer Than Me

My oldest child was born with a creative flare. She can turn a shoebox into a condominium for paper dolls with a handmade wardrobe of  dresses, visors and shoes. I’m not kidding.

Some days I just follow behind her with a rag and a worried look.

The other day she was bent on painting my face. I have no idea why. She woke up and for eight straight hours asked if she could paint something on my face with craft paint. (Oh, and she started a Christmas list with FACE PAINT being the only thing on it).

I told her no, all day long. Because y’all, SHE WANTED TO PAINT MY FACE.

Her daddy walked thru the door and she asked him once.

I think we all know his answer.

Because 20 minutes later, he looked like this:

(The Joker was all her idea. I didn’t even know she knew about The Joker. Obviously, I need to get a handle on my parenting).

Yes, I agree. FREAKY.

But hysterical that he went and put on a “costume” to complete the look and then posed for pictures.

(I live in a circus, y’all).

My hubby isn’t one to do things halfway. So it’s only natural that he in turn painted my daughter’s face and whipped up a sunset scene from Africa:

Just an ordinary night at our house.

I can’t make this stuff up, y’all.

It Feels Like Redemption

We sat in lawn chairs that sat in lush grass. Kids around us, running with cupped hands, catching summer fireflies. Friends, Amber and Seth, drawn together by the uncommon, only to us, common.

Seth leaned in and asked this question as if the night hinged on it, “What was it about Africa that was so redeeming for you?”

I almost laughed it away when I heard the word Africa because I’ve written and talked about it so much. What else could I say? But I didn’t laugh. I stopped and I let the question surround me, sink in. Because in his question, I found my answer.

I’ve struggled with this trip-turned-obsession. I was only in Kenya for 9 days, NINE short days! What is wrong with me, why can’t I get out of Africa?

I was redeemed as a child. I have lived my life serving God. I’ve made mistakes along the way, failing miserably, but God has always been in my life, a push and pull relationship. But before Africa, Jesus wasn’t enough. I sought after the American Dream and treated my Savior like a side dish. Somewhere along the way in my Christian walk, I’d forgotten the most important thing: Christ.

On that humid night in Arkansas, with fireflies lighting the night, I answered his question: It was the time, the place, the emptiness of my life coinciding with the hope that I saw. Africa renewed my purpose in Him. It’s the legacy I want to pass on to my kids: to love others more than I love myself.

Sarah Markley bravely asks the question, “Do I have to go to Africa” to be wrecked by God?”

No.

I believe it comes when you least expect it, but are ready for it: next to a hospital bed, at a birth or death, alone with God or surrounded by friends. God uses the ordinary and often the extraordinary to grab our attention and refocus it on Him.

But for me, it was Africa.

And it feels like redemption.

What about you?

WFMW: Shower CleaningTip

When we moved into our house almost seven years ago, the shower door in the master bath was disgusting. No, really, it was just plain gross. It had a dozen years of hard water build up and you could hardly see thru it. It took awhile, but we scrubbed and scraped that puppy clean with some high-powered chemicals.

In order to keep it from happening again, I hung a squeegee on a suction cup and threatened my family: if you shower, you squeegee. With a quick swipe, the water is removed and Momma is happy. Seven years later, the door is in perfect condition (for a door that’s more than a dozen years old!), but don’t ask about the rest of my house, k?

What works for you?
