Congrats to reader (no blog) Deborah (comment #12)! You’re the winner!
We’ve sort of got book-writing on the brain these days in our house.
My kids think I’m going to be famous for this. We’re all about false reality here.
(I did have to autograph the cover of my book the other day and I mispelled my name. So there’s that. Oh, infamy, you’re a slippery one).
My oldest daughter wants to be a writer/slash cook. (I’m leaning on my neighbor for the second part). My son loves reading, but he’d rather illustrate a book than write it-all the more reason to make him write, I say. (insert mean mom here).
So, when I got an email from Tikatok, offering to let my kids write their own hard bound book, I jumped at the chance for them (insert sweet/mean mom here-depending on which kid you are).
They both decided to write a book for their DAD!! Can you believe it? So much for their famous mother! But it is his 40th birthday this month, so a win for seniority.
Here’s a sample of what they created:

He’s going to love them.

And I’m giving away a gift certificate TO CREATE A BOOK for a lucky reader today!
Leave a comment, telling me if your kids enjoy writing and you’ll be entered to win a Tikatok book.
This giveaway ends on Thursday.

What a great idea! My oldest loves to write — he’d be thrilled to see his work in a hard-covered book!
neither of my kids really enjoy writing.. The actual PHYSICAL hand writing part of wrting. They LOVE creating stories, they just hate wrtiing them down!!
My ten year old son now has a designated notebook for his song writing. Look forward to seeing his future works!
no – they don’t. I am so the mean mom in that case, too – I think it’s so important!
my daughter is 5 and loves to write. She is just starting to learn her sight words and is at the start of reading. She would love to read a book that she wrote.

How sweet is that! My daughter has a strong desire to be a writer and I in courage her to live her dream!
My 6 year old would love this! He is forever stapling paper together and writing his own books. Hope your husband enjoys his gift – over and over again.
So far, of our oldest ones, it’s the 9 yr old daughter that is the budding writer of the bunch. We just need to keep working on her spelling
My daughter just started Kindergarten, but she loves to tell stories and often pretends to write — or has me (painstakingly) spell every word for her as she tries to write down her thoughts.
My oldest LOVES writing, making up stories and coloring pictures to go with them. It’s adorable. We would love this book thing.
My 9 yo actually wants to be a writer/illustrator when he grows up. I’ve been dissucussing with my brother’s girlfriend (the artist in the family) about purchasing a professional set of colored pencils for him for Christmas. I’m going to consider this for him for his 10th birthday (New Year’s Eve).
My 5 year old loves to TELL stories, most of them involving a light saber-wielding C3PO … or dragons. He can’t really read and write yet, although he’s working on it. I think he’d have fun working on a real book.
My daughter is convinced that she will be a famous author someday. She writes stories all the time and even has decided on a pretty good pen name.
She would love this!
My youngest likes to write
My two daughters love to “write” stuff. My 5yo son finds writing hard, but he tries his best.
My kids love to make up stories, dramas, and comics. Sometimes, I even get them to write. Maybe this will help that endeavor!
Burke doesn’t speak yet, so writing is not on his list of top priorities.
Ruby, however, *loves* to make up stories. She’s only three, so writing them down is not necessarily in the books yet. Recently, we’ve even noticed that she’s begun to narrate her life. i.e. ” ‘BURKE! BURKE!’ I screamed.” It’s pretty comical.
My 8 year old is ALWAYS writing stories!! He would LOVE this! My 11 year old likes to invent things and can explain his inventions but hates to write to his brother does the writing and he does the telling. Great givaway and awesome book that your kids made!! Thanks!
Oh, wow! Would I loooove this!! Thanks for the great give away!
Neat idea!
My little guy loves to write. I think he still gets tickled that he actually can!!
My 5 year old heard a rumor (about a week before school started) that she’d have to write a journal in Kindergarten (which indeed is true!). Anyways, she thought she better get started, so she asked me for 6 blank white sheets of computer paper to write her 1st book. It was so adorable because she kept coming to me for spelling help i.e., once, a time, princess, happily . . . you get the gist. At the end of at least 2 hours of coloring pictures and writing her story, she came and asked for the stapler to bind it all together. So darn cute . . . I had tears!!!! We’ll keep this 1st book forever!
The next time this happened, she asked for 10 sheets . . . I think I see a trend here. . .
Needless to say, she’s now been in Kindergarten for 3 weeks and has several pages of her “official Kindergarten journal” complete. Yippee!
My youngest is always drawing, writing, stapleing pages and making books. he would love this!
My girls love writing! What a fun giveaway! Thanks!
My daughter loves writing stories. Thanks for the opportunity to win this!
My kids don’t really love writing, but (mean mom that I am) I make them do it anyway. I would love to use this book to save some of their artwork, though. That would be a fun keepsake that I think they would really enjoy more than writing a book. Thanks for the give-away!
Some of my chidlren enjoy writing, but they all enjoy TELLING, so we could use this and I can record their words. I have found that their stories become much longer and more complex by simply taking the writing aspect on myself as recorder. I write down exactly what they say, including all the um, uh parts. Then they edit it. It’s great!
getting my son to write is a day by day thing. some days he loves it, is totally motivated and will write beautifully. other days, it’s like pulling teeth just to get him to write his spelling words. gotta love 3rd graders!!
When my girlies were younger it was like pulling teeth to get them to write. Now as teens they both enjoy it much more. My oldest has actually written two ‘books’ for me and I would love to see a hardback copy of either of them!
Like you I have one of each. My son loves to read and write. My daughter gets to learn that everything in life is not going to go according to her preference
What a wonderful giveaway – thank you!
My son loves to write and illustrate his own books. Great idea!
My son dreams of being an author. In fact, he wrote a letter to a very famous kids’ author recently with an idea for a new book as well as a drawing of HIS own character that should make an appearance in the book. He’d love the chance to write his own.
My son loves to come up with elaborate stories and my daughter LOVES to draw…a perfect book-composing pair!! Please enter us!
My 14 year old son HATES to write. Sigh. I guess we can’t all have perfect children. My 5 year old & 4 year old both LOVE doing school and write things all the time – can I read their creative spelling? Not so much, but with time that will get better, I hope!
My daughter just told someone that writing is her favorite thing to do at school. It was news to me! She’d love this!
My son loves to write. Now that he has a desk in his room he has a great place to concentrate away from his little sisters. He’s written a few small chapter books, mostly involving superheroes and Legos.
My kids have a love-hate relationship with writing. They love to write IF I haven’t told them it is for school!
My son does:) He’d love to see his writing in print:)
Thanks for entering us.
Lizzie
My son, who is 7 1/2, has about 100 pages of computer paper of his “book” about the Titanic and then an imaginary ship he made up called the Titania. He’s such a nerd. I love him to pieces.
This has to be one of the “funnest” giveaways I’ve ever seen! I love this idea! My daughter does like to write, and she writes exactly how she talks, which makes her writing really funny. I think I would ask her to write a commentary on our family…a page about each family member and each regular part of our day.
My daughter is 4 and she loves to tell a story! I would love to have her be able to write her own book!
My girls, ages 8 and 6 are great story tellers! We could lessen our carbon footprint if they would stop stapling reams of paper together to make their books. They both are creative and love to add their own spin to bible stories to “help others understand better”. THis looks like a great project.. would love to win it for them!
Both my son and daugher love to read and create a story! They would love this
Yes, yes, yes! I have one in second and one in first and they have both recently learned about the author and illustrator. My kids would LOVE to write a book.
AWESOME! No kids yet, but a million siblings (okay, 5 younger siblings, plus a couple foster kids running around) who would love this…
My son LOVES writing and making his own books! The last one he did (last week) was a bout…okay, maybe I should not say it here….he is a boy, so you might could guess… “Mr. Poop.” Winning this might encourage some more noble writing?!
My kids are already doing this. How awesome would it be to make it “official”?
My son, the only one of my kids old enough write, doesn’t like the actual process but is proud of the finished result
)
I would love to win this giveaway and have my kids write a book about their Daddy, who passed away 2 1/2 years ago, just after my youngest was born. What a wonderful way that would be to help keep his memory alive and remember him <3
My son, the only one of my kiddos old enough to write, doesn’t enjoy the actual process of writing much, but he’s proud of the finished products
)
I would love to win this giveaway and have my kids write a story about their Daddy, who passed away 2 1/2 years ago, just after my youngest was born. It would be a wonderful way to help keep his memory alive.
(And I’m sorry if this shows up twice, I submitted once and it didn’t show up!)
My kids enjoy making up stories and writing. I love to see their imagination!
My kids do enjoy writing. But i have one in particular out of all four that REALLY enjoys it. I would think that her personality is more the creative “artsy” type
Last year in school her teacher chose her little short story to be published in a little publication put out by our province of young writers. We were very proud of her!!
It would be fun to do up a “real” book with the kids!!!!!
My kids are writeaholics – is that a word? Love writing over here! Great giveaway!
This is fantastic! Honestly, I’m thinking it would be a great teacher gift, wouldn’t it? My 5 year old would absolutely love this too as I am constantly writing down her dictations!
Thanks for the contest!
I’ve got a three year old and a first grader so we’re still working on HandWriting! But they love books and love to read, so I’m hoping they will catch the writing bug!
My oldest loves to read and make up stories. I’m sure this would make a great creative project.
My son does not like to write, but my daughter does. Only if it’s something she wants to write about . . . . not stuff from school, heaven forbid!
There’s nothing better for a child than seeing their story in real print! My boys would love to see it happen to one of their stories:)
My boy (six) has been making his own little books for quite some time now. This would be wonderful for him!
My kids enjoy writing when it’s something they initiate, rather than something I give them as schoolwork. Amazing how a full sheet of paper can be filled with a message to Grandma & Grandpa, but writing a couple of sentences for an English assignment may cause the sky to fall! LOL! I’m always delighted when they write little stories or letters to loved ones. We’ll take the writing in whatever form we can get it!
My kiddos hate to write! One loves to read, the other loves to draw. We’re working on the writing part
My daughter LOVES to write! I think she would absolutely freak out to have one of her stories in a hard bound book. What a fun idea!!!
Kelli
What a great home school project!!! My oldest is finally starting to enjoy writing, and he is also becoming quite good at it.
I must admit, too, that it kinda sounds fun for me as well.
If I said yes, I’d be lying. However, since we homeschool this would be a PERFECT way to get them interested!
My son struggles with self-expression but I think this could be the ticket for him! What a great job your kids did.
My first born JUST went off to school for the very first time this morning! We are just beginning the journey of reading and writing. I LOVED writing books as a child and hope that he follows my passion…
Haha… well, my girls LOVE to tell stories, just not write them by hand. They are all for dictation, though.
My second grader is struggling with reading, so this could be her inspiration!
HOW FUN! I still have the books that I wrote and my parents got it “published” for me. I would love to do this with my students as a fun writing project! One of my favorite poetry books is a book that a class wrote!
This would be awesome – my kiddos all love to read and (most) of them like to write too!
My boys are 5 and 3 – they love books! After family bedtime stories, they go to bed with books and a flashlight. Oh how special their own book would be to them…
My 12 year old loves to write – and he illustrates well too. He would really enjoy this. I would love to win it for him.
My 10 yr old doesn’t exactly like to write, but does keep a couple of notebooks that have stories started in them. I would love to have them put together to save for when he is older.
I think that my oldest daughter would truely love this oppertunity, she is always writing something and loves to write stories for her little brother to learn something from or a play for her and the neighborhood kids to perform.
my son and my husband love to write stories together and would love this. plus my husband will be 40 this year too and this would be such a fun gift for him.
my kids like to create books out of papers at home, I think this would be a great creative outlet for them. Thanks for the giveaway.
My 7 year old would absolutely love this! =)
My niece loves to write-she loves leaving notes for her family through the house.
My kids love creating stories……. Now the actual writing part they’re still learning, but they love stories.
No, my kids aren’t writers yet. We are just starting spelling this year and I hope to do more of this.
Oh my son would love to do this! I have bookmarked this site and will most definitely show him! He LOVES to create his own stories. His inspiration right now is from Diary of A Wimpy Kid. Sometimes I have to literally tear him away from writing for dinner
My daughter has been SO into writing these last few weeks. This would be such an amazing gift for her!
My daughter is very creative, and she loves writing! You never know what she will come up with next!!
I’ve written stories for as long as I can remember…I love it! This year we are going to be doing a lot of creating & writing stories. Few things are more encouraging to a young writer than to see their work in print!
Glad to learn about this website. My children love to write stories and we have been exploring ways to publish them.
My oldest daughter who just started 1st grade LOVES to write! She also loves to illustrate her stories! What a perfect gift this would be for her.
Thank you for inspiring me everyday!
Even if I don’t win this is a great idea and I love your blog.
