We are THAT Family
... you know the ones.
Thanks for the love and support. It’s both humbled me to my knees and created instances of The Ugly Cry.

No questions…just so excited to be a part of this in any way possible!!
I’m praying for your endeavor and have been rolling this over and over in my mind. God’s timing on bringing all of the “players” together in this is just amazing. Who but God could have orchestrated this? I know you’re in for an adventure and I’m following your story and will continue to pray. Remember Hudson Taylor’s philosophy: God’s work done in God’s way will not lack God’s resources. He who began this good work will be faithful to see it through and bring much fruit from it. To Him be the glory!
It’s so exciting to read all that God is “birthing” through yall, so to speak. I really have no idea how I found your blog, but check it from time to time. I’m a young mother of two and always enjoy reading up on your parenting stuff since youre more ahead of the game. Do you have email? I’m sure it’d be hard to reply to everything. Our family lives in Kenya, we have a children’s home. The need is so great for what you are doing. Friends of ours are doing a similar house for teenage women where we live. Ok, this is getting random. Just wanted to offer any help on setting up stuff in Kenya if you dont already have a lot. You’re an inspiring and encouraging mama!
Kimberly-I would love to talk to you about your life in Kenya and your children’s home! My email is firstname.lastname@example.org
Do you have a Tax ID number for The Mercy House so I can donate through my Donor Advised Fund?
Amy, at this point, The Mercy House in incorporated and we have an EIN #. We have applied for 501c3 status and it is pending. We are hoping/praying it will be approved before the end of the year.
Talk to your Thirty One Gifts rep >eyein’ your advertisement< she may be able to put together a fundraiser for you!
Looks like a very good work you are doing- very needed and may God bless you. Are you not adopting now?
For now, we are putting actual adoption on hold. Although Maureen calls us mom and dad and I feel like I have a daughter in Kenya.
If we were to ever move to Kenya, we would probably pursue adoption (as they only adopt to residents).
You have too adopted! She is the daughter of your heart, and in some ways that’s more important than the legalities. My mother-in-law is like that.
I left a question in the Contact part of the Mercy House site the other day. Did it get to you? I’m sure you’ve been extremely busy this week, but it may have gotten lost, too.
If you need advice on running a non-profit, there are FREE S.C.O.R.E. counselors in pretty much every city. They are retired executives who volunteer their time to help small business/non-profits, etc, anything related to the business world. They are under the Small Business Administration, but it is all free and no strings. My dad volunteers with them in Hawaii, but that won’t help ya much.
Thanks, Deb, for the info.
We filed for our 501c3 status through CharityNetUSA. Once we receive that status, we plan to work thru Network for Good.
This isn’t about the new project , which is amazing! I am praying now about how we will be able to support this project. Is there any way we can get a copies of your old news letter? I din’t know you were doing this and would love to have the previous ones. Thanks so much. God bless you, your family, and everything you are doing.
I can’t find anywhere to email you. I am a collage artist and am interested in making artwork for you to sell in your etsy store. Will you email me when you get the chance please? I want to send you a link to my etsy store and tell you what I have in mind. Thanks! Kristie
um….never mind…just found your email in comments section. I will email you now
Just wanted you to know you are inspiring and I wrote about it here: http://www.happyhipmama.com/2010/09/women-who-inspire.html
I just can’t wait till tommorrow to see where y’all are at in the efforts! I just have a great feeling about this!!
How will you determine who you choose to take in? I know your website states 6 beds so the 6 young women will be there total until they graduate the program. What are the requirements of graduation?
I know they leave with the money they earned while there, but is there any direction provided after that or do they go back to live with family? I guess the situation would determine that, but I didn’t know if you would say keep in touch with them (that sounds dumb “knowing” you that will happen) or point them in the direction of other possibly helpful resources.
What other kinds of staff will you have there? Having a child there seems to be very different from having a child here in America. Will there be doctors or just nurse mid-wife type people? Teachers since they can’t go to school?
Sorry, I am full of questions. I guess I am just intrigued.
Great questions! We will probably choose the girls based on need. If they do not have a home or are an orphan, they will get first priority. This is something we are praying about. It is our hope to expand to be able to help a lot more girls.
As far as “graduation” goes, we will determine it on an individual basis. We want to teach these girls to have true livable skills, so they can have a new life and not return and repeat the cycle. We want them to have money to do this, but instead of giving them a “lump sum” of what they’ve earned through the items we sell, we will divide up the $300 (which is a yearly wage) into monthly installments. We hope to have a offer a once a week meeting of classes/meal/etc for graduates to keep them in touch with us and so we can check on them when we “pay” them. Another amazing thing we are working on currently, is partnering with an already established street ministry in Kenya that has a young mother program. Once they have their baby, graduate our program, we are hoping they can spend a few month learning how to be a mother with other girls.
The other staff besides Maureen will be an Asst. Executive Director who will do the bookkeeping-they will both teach also (Bible study, classes, etc). We will have nurse who does prenatal care, checkups, pregnancy tests in the community, classes, etc. We will have a housemother to stay with the girls at night and also help make purchases during the day. The girls themselves will help cook/clean. The villa we are planning to rent comes with a security guard.
Hope that answers the questions—great questions.
Yes, it does. Thanks. Your plan to follow up after graduation sounds great.
Kristen — I would love your opinion on this blog post about beauty and serving God, if you have time.
Do you know this song, Kristen? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvSwcMp9vU4
I first heard this song maybe 5 weeks ago (horrible at time frames) and thought of you immediately. It’s been running through my head since Monday….I’ve been praying for you ALOT.
I would love to help you in some way. Is there a way that I can help that’s not monetary? We are trying to recover from my husband being out of work for almost a year. He’s recently landed a temporary to permanent position! yay! So when our financial state is better, I’d love to help that way. For now, is there anything I can do?
Yes, Christi! There is so much to do! can you email me? Blessings.
you’ve got mail!
Well it is not much, but this is what I can do. I sell for one of those home parties. We can have an online fundraiser party. My commission is 20%. If your party sales are more than $2000 I can give you 30%. I know it’s not much but those numbers are exactly what I make. I wish there was more I could do. I have been following you for a while now. I come to your site when I am having a bad day or at a low moment and you always help me to put my life back in perspective. I admire what you are doing, both at home and abroad. Let me know if I can be of any further help.

So glad you are listening ato God and DOING!
Here is another group doing something similar not sure if it will help or not.
Sorry! Here is the link
Several people have emailed asking if we are moving to Africa. The short answer: We don’t know. Maybe some day.
In June 2011, we will travel to Kenya with our family and stay for a month. We will be working in The Mercy House, looking at land to purchase, getting a vehicle if we haven’t already, teaching skills to the Mercy House staff and most importantly, connecting w/dozens of ministries, physicians, people who we hope to work with.
At some point, we hope to live in Kenya for at least a year, but only God knows….
Yes, it will be very expensive for our family to travel, take a leave of absence from work, etc. We don’t have debt and we have good jobs, so we are saving money like crazy and trusting a lot
Hi! My aunt follows your blog regularly and she showed me this whole posting on The Mercy House and I am so excited about your vision! I am currently a birth doula, and I am working towards getting my BSN in Nursing with the overall goal of becoming a Certified Nurse Midwife.
I am wondering, once this house is set up, will the women who live there give birth there too? Or will they go to the local hospital? Will you need midwives on staff? Because if you do, I know of a good place to tell people about that!
We are SO THAT family, too. Ask my wife, Serenity. She’ll tell you.
The reason I’m writing is to find out if you are in need of any medical personnel for the Mercy House? I am an RN in the ICU and am interested in medical missions, and I’m willing to travel. I have close contacts here in Grand Blanc, MI at Genesys Regional Medical Center with other nurses/physicians who are willing to travel and volunteer in whatever way you may need. Several ICU nurses here already have experience with medical missions and are looking for their next opportunity. Anyway, let me know if this is something that interests you, or if we can fill a need.
Hello mates, good post and good arguments commented here,
I am genuinely enjoying by these.
HI! I'm Kristen. I'm here to encourage you as a wife and mom and remind you there's a little bit of THAT family in all of us. I write books, run Mercy House and try to remember I am third (God first, others second). I'm glad you're here.
