WFMW: How to Help in Oklahoma

[Linky for WFMW will be added to this post at the normal time 10pm CST time tonight]

Before school this morning, my 6 year said, “Momma, what if a tornado comes to my school today? I don’t want to die. I prayed for all the people in Oklahoma last night.”

When tragedy strikes, we are all touched.

Her words sum up how devastated we all feel for the beautiful people of Oklahoma. My in-laws and many other family members and friends live in this state and I know it affects so many far and wide.

When I was 20 years old, I was home from college for the weekend when a killer tornado hit our Dallas neighborhood. As the freight train of wind and debris moved thru our home, my parents lay on top of me, protecting me with their bodies. I’ll never forget the way they sacrificed for me or the way our community lifted us up. The Red Cross fed us breakfast everyday and we picked up toiletries and aid at the local high school, volunteers shoveled glass and put up roof tarps. Everyone gave.

I think prayer is the greatest gift we can give Oklahoma today. Here are some other good ways to give:

regardless of your religious affiliation, the Southern Baptists have a spectacular disaster relief organization and all proceeds go directly to those affected. It is also a reputable safe place through which to send donations.

My sister-in-law’s brother lives in Moore – 2 blocks from the school. Their house is gone but the family is safe. They started homeschooling this year, otherwise their kids would have been at the school! We will be donating to Samaritan’s Purse and also helping this one family specifically. Thanks for listing ways that people can help!

I don’t know if you know this or not but hslda helps people get the word out if they have lost their books in a disaster like this. When one hit Mississippi they put the word out for a friend of mine and she got every thing she needed for three kids and then some! The people were very generous.

I would encourage people who want to help to donate through Samaritan’s Purse. My hubby and 4 of our bigs have spent over 5 weeks volunteering with them on rebuilds and tornado cleanups over the last 2 years. They are responsible with the donations they receive and take excellent care of their equipment – but they also get right in their and get the job done.

From Oklahoma, thank you so much for posting, and thanks to those who give! My parents have worked with the Baptist Disaster Relief for years, and the services they provide are given with utmost love and care. They have set up a food truck at a local site that will serve 35,000 (not a typo) meals a day. They also send out mud-out and chain-saw crews to help with the clean up. Thanks again!

Wow that must have been terrifying! I can’t even imagine.

I have been through a couple of earthquakes but they were pretty light ones. We only lost a few things and got some cracks in the wall. The earth rolls and it’s very noisy because the windows are rattling and things are moving, but you hide under the table and as I’ve said, we haven’t had a really bad one yet.

    Thanks for hosting today!

Kristen: Thanks for your prayers and the prayers of your readers. You know, cause you married into an OKIE family, that we are strong and resilient…but, NOTHING can take the place of the prayers and support of others! My heart aches for the families that have lost so much.
