There Will Be a Response

Africa is beautiful. When people ask me about my trip, my reply is, “It was heartbreaking and hopeful.”

Wild animals roam freely (like the baboon that jumped out of the tree and stole a sugar packet from the breakfast table at our hotel!) The Compassion Kenya staff laughed at us when we asked them to pull the van off the road, so we could photograph a herd of wild zebras. (They laughed harder when I squealed and pointed like a girl at the zoo).

One of the most amazing sites was a herd of elephants near the road.

elephant3

We were told by one of our Kenyan friends that elephants love each other deeply. If one of their own dies, the other elephants mourn the loss. They grieve and can be heard crying for miles. Mother elephants are distraught over the deaths of their babies. They honor the dead by trying to bury the body with branches and leaves, so it won’t be destroyed by other animals.

elephant4

Elephants seek out the lost and even in death, they honor them by collecting the bones of the dead and place them in an elephant graveyard. Each year, around the same time, the elephants travel back to this place to mourn.

elephant2

Simply put, they remember…. so they won’t forget.

They remember the death and the time of pain. They weep for the lost. Then they carry on, but they do not forget.

This week has been a time of remembering for me. I have been reading the posts from the Compassion Guatemala Blogger Team and so much of what I felt and experienced has come back in soulful rush of emotion. I have wept for the lost and rejoiced with those found.

Ann has one line in this amazing post that rocked me to the core: “Once we have seen [poverty], we are responsible–we will respond. One way or the other.”

I’ve been out of Africa for six months. My response is coming Monday (Love Mercy). I pray you will take this prophetic word and respond with me. One way or the other.

I did more than snap pictures of wild animals in Africa; I learned from these great beautiful beasts.

I want to remember…..

elephant1

so I don’t forget.

I’m a Mom

I wrote this post last year in honor of THE REAL Labor Day (hello, birth) and the comments were aplenty and absolutely hysterical! I was so sad to see that when I moved my blog to WordPress, all the comments were lost. So. Tell me: how much time you spent laboring and the combined birth weight of your babies. There will be imaginary bon bons for the pretend winners!

*Adoptive moms go through labor too–often longer and harder! Add up the travel hours and the gotcha birthweight !

- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
When I first started birthing babes, I was shocked at how hard it was to juggle everything.
I’m not just talking about play dates, housework and school projects.
I mean literally, juggling a diaper bag, a 100-pound baby carrier, not including a baby who’s thighs resemble a small Sumo wrestler, a purse, all while trying to keep your two year old from scraping gum off the concrete.
I’ve always thought that with the title Mother, we should also grow an extra appendage or two. Because, seriously, an extra arm would come in handy when I’m stirring dinner, loading the dishwasher, calling out multiplication facts, stepping over the mock kitchen my toddler has created underfoot, and paying bills online-simultaneously.
In one day, I accomplish more than some small companies. Heck, I am a small company.
I’ve spent a combined total of nearly 40 hours in labor, delivering more than 20 pounds of human.
And I’ll be honest, when someone has the nerve to ask me in a tone, “What do you do all day?”
I’ve decided this will be my forever answer:
“I’m a Mom. What’s your superpower?”
Mothering is a labor of love!
Happy Labor Day, y’all!
(Tell me how much time in labor and combined birth weights you’ve had in the comment section)

What to do When Your Pants Rip

I hurried and dressed quickly to get to the church early. I couldn’t afford to run late since I was leading the children’s program that morning. I quickly grabbed a pair of pants off the top of a stack, not remembering that the pile was supposed to go to the cleaner’s weeks before for repair.

That was my first mistake.
I got there just in time to open the classrooms and double check the list of workers. Kids filled the classrooms and I remembered I’d left my notebook in the worship pastor’s office. I slipped in quietly while he was on the phone and pointed to my pile of stuff. He nodded and I squatted to get my things.
That was my second mistake.
My pants ripped from front to back, leaving me exposed, literally. . .

Date Night

We went to Chick Fil A, sipped on sweet tea and played Farkle for an hour.

It was perfect.

P.S. He’s eight today and still the sweetest boy I know. Happy Birthday, son!

WFMW: Internet Safety Software/Apps

I love the Internet. We have a great relationship. It’s completely taken the place of TV in my life -I probably watch about 30 minutes of Television a week. (There’s just not much on that’s good anymore!) I read all my news and keep current by getting online (yo, Twitter).

But, the Internet is not a safe place. It makes me sick, SICK to think of all the evil things online. And it makes me mad that the pornography sites not only want my attention, they go after it. They even try to entice my children.
If you don’t have safety software, parental guidelines and restrictions or your computer in a high traffic place, you’re being foolish. It’s just a matter of time for this filth to invade your home and your child’s mind.
Thank you for joining me for WFMW! {You can read the guidelines here.} Have a Works-For-Me Wednesday tip you’d like to share? I’d love for you to join us!

Boob Alert

This is a family blog.

So. I thought I should give y’all FAIR WARNING, that while the new BABIES movie is delightful and educational and oh-so-good, there are a lot, A LOT of native boobies in the documentary.

And while they aren’t displayed in a sexual manner AT ALL, they are still breasts on the big screen with your seven year old son sitting next to you.
On Mother’s Day.
Because that’s where you asked your family to take you. After church.
[I'm a big fan of breast feeding. My kids are aware of it and we all support it. But this was like making dinner, braiding hair, living without a shirt on in the background with the babies crawling around. Because that's what they do in Africa. I just wasn't really prepared for it and I spent a lot of time keeping my hands over my son's eyes during the hour documentary-not during the breast feeding parts, just the walking around parts.]
I LOVED the film, loved it! In the future, I’d just like to keep all boob exposure to a minimum, especially on Mother’s Day. (I do think a PG rating isn’t appropriate and there should be some kind of disclaimer).

Would this have bothered you? Would you have taken your kids out? Or is this not an issue for you/family? We just chalked it up to an educational experience and talked a lot about it afterwards!

Bad Pictures are Good Posts

[I totally ripped off my fellow Compassion blogger, Ryan Detzel, for this great title]
My iPhone had 323 photos on it. I decided to clean it up a bit……….
only to discover it’s those bad photos that make great pictures:
Because everyone needs googley eyes:
This is one of 14 photos of my fisherman hubby and a fish:

I married a hick (if the above picture didn’t clarify that, the hat will):

Glazed over eyes=time to get off (also your toddler is taking pictures AGAIN):
Cousins on a shopping day for matching swimsuits (sisters sharing coupons):

What happens when your hubby tries to rub your headache away (bruising the next day!):
Deep thoughts:

Flying to Africa:

Appointment to the eye Dr. with your son turns date when you add dessert:

My oldest with her face smashed against my window:

It’s those unplanned, spontaneous moments of living that make the best memories!

Mothering Sons

Mothering sons in our society is not easy, neither is mothering daughters.

With our destructive media, pressure from peers and a boy’s natural inclination to lust after the opposite sex, a mother’s work is never done.

My son is turning 8 years old this month and while he is still naive and lives a sheltered life, I can’t sit back and wait to talk to him about tough issues, like purity and girls. Because someone else will. The TV programs (Disney Channel) and movies (like Diary of a Wimpy Kid) are not afraid to address the boy/girl issue. I can’t be scared either.

When we take the initiative to introduce a Godly standard, everything else he hears or sees will be compared to the high standard God has put into place to protect and provide for His kids.

In my opinion, I think boys 8 and under should be taught:
  • to respect girls (even their pesky sisters)
  • to never, ever hit a girl
  • to open the door for Mom, help her with groceries
  • to give Mom and sisters privacy when they dress or shower
  • to honor other people’s personal space
  • to protect their own body from invasion
  • to only go to Internet sites approved by parents
  • to know their own anatomy (great talk for Dad’s)
  • to say no to ANYONE (kids and adults) who wants to touch them inappropriately, play sexual games, etc

Your Boy: Raising a Godly Son in an Ungodly World by Vicki Courtney is an excellent resource for this age.

I think boys 9 thru 11 should be taught:
  • about sex (the basics-which have changed since you were a kid)
  • about their changing body
  • about girls (how they flirt, think, change into young women)
  • about the evilness on the Internet (pornography)
  • about standing up for what’s right (in conversation w/ other boys), even if it means standing alone
  • about pressure to be cool and like everyone else (they don’t have to have a cell phone or iTouch to be cool-I don’t recommend either!)

Preparing Your Son for Every Man’s Battle: Honest Conversations About Sexual Integrity is an excellent resource for this age!

For boys 12 and up:
Don’t hold back. The world isn’t. There is an agenda to make sex before marriage the norm. Talk to them about choosing purity. I highly recommend taking your sons on a weekend at 12 or 13 years for a ="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre-wrap; ">Passport to Purity retreat. At this age, there needs to be CONSTANT communication and supervision regarding sex, purity, pornography, girls, lust, movies, music etc.

What would you add to my age-appropriate lists?

The Love of a Man

I closed my eyes and relaxed as the hair stylist washed my hair (the best part of a haircut!)

She stopped, her hands still in my tangled hair. I squinted open an eye. She leaned in and said in a quiet voice,”You are a lucky woman. Do you know how much your husband loves you?”
My face posed a question mark.
She answered, “I cut your husband’s hair last week and you were all he talked about. You should have seen the way his face lit up talking about you!”
I smiled and warmed at her words. Until, I recognized the longing in her voice and the loneliness in her eyes. It’s a look I recognized, the one of a woman who isn’t loved well.
This was the second time in recent days, someone commented on my husband’s love for me.
“He talks about you. I see love in his eyes when he says your name. He is proud of you.”
I feel unworthy of such adoration and remarkable love from my spouse. But it’s a true reflection of His love for God, and God’s love for me.
The love of a man is reflected in a wife’s face. Her steps are lighter, her burden is eased. She scowls less and laughs more. Every wife needs her husband’s love.
I asked my hubby to tell me what makes him love me so well.
He Said:
Five Reasons a Man Loves His Wife
(This is what I heard):
  1. A man who loves Jesus naturally loves his wife. A wife who loves her God is irresistible.
  2. A man who is respected by his wife loves her deeply in return.
  3. A man loves watching his wife care for his children.
  4. A man who is heard and listened to by his wife finds her intriguing and desirable.
  5. A man who is satisfied talks about his wife when she isn’t around.
Tell me: Are you a loved woman?

WFMW: Backwards Edition

Today, I’m hosting The Backwards Edition of Works For Me Wednesday-where you turn the table and ask for tips from your reader! (If you forgot and have a regular tip, it’s okay! Themes are just suggested!)

I’ve been looking forward to this because I have a doozy of a question and I’m desperate for help!!
I think I should be embarrassed to confess this, but y’all know already I’m terribly human and lead of life of perpetual embarrassment!
So. In a nutshell: 3/4 of my cotton shirts hanging in my closet have a tiny hole in them. The holes just appear out of nowhere. At first, I thought it was my washing machine or dryer snagging the shirts. But then, I thought it might be a bug problem (I KNOW!!)
I’ve never actually seen a bug or even evidence of one. I bought the moth ball stuff at WalMart to hang in my closet and it didn’t seem to stop the holy shirts. I hate the smell of moth balls, so I bought the Fresh Scent. Don’t let that fool you. It’s not a pleasant smell. So, I tossed the stinky things in the trash because holes are better than stink any day.
So, do bugs eat cotton? Help?? My hubby’s cotton shirts are fine and my other clothes are good. It’s a conspiracy, I tell you!
Got any tips for me?
Thank you for joining me for WFMW! {You can read the guidelines here.} Have a Works-For-Me Wednesday tip you’d like to share? I’d love for you to join us!

A Happy Woman {Giveaway}

WINNERS HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED HERE.

The other day, I was looking for a certain picture on the CD of our family photo shoot from last summer. I stopped at this one, an impromptu kiss captured, a photo I passed over for it’s imperfection (my oldest stepped out of the shot), a picture that gripped my heart and made me stop:

Picnik collage

May she who gave you birth be happy. ~ Proverbs 23:25

I have 10,000 reasons to be happy, but today, I’m thinking of the three little ones who call me Momma, Mom, Mommy or sometimes MMMOOOOMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!

Motherhood isn’t about the perfect, crisp moments. It’s about the impromptu kisses and hugs. Those are the ones that make me smile in the dark of the night and fill my heart.

Link up a photo post in all it’s imperfections (you link it just like always, just make sure there’s a picture in the post) that defines motherhood to you (of you with your kids, your kids by themselves, your mother, etc)…THREE photos will be chosen to receive a $50 gift certificate to the one and only The Vintage Pearl.

Erin, mom of four and creator of The Vintage Pearl has a gorgeous new exclusive design that would make a beautiful gift for Mom (yours or yourself!)

One of my all time favorite necklaces is from The Vintage Pearl and I wear it all the time. I always get asked about it!

Erin’s work is known worldwide and I’m honored that she’s been a long time sponsor of We are THAT family and become a friend!

This photo show-off giveaway will last thru the week! Winners will be announced on Mother’s Day weekend. You can link up an old post or a new, but please make sure it has a picture that describes motherhood to you.

When Her Life is Better Than Mine

I have a friend. She lives in an amazing house. She has well behaved children and more than enough money for every need and want. Oh, and she’s beautiful. And if all that isn’t enough, she’s a wonderful person, who gives to the poor, defends the weak, serves others. She has an amazing life.
I used to think it was better than mine.

You don’t have to be a genius to realize that some people have it better than you.

You only have to be human.

What She Taught Me This Week:

1. Falling down hurts, but that doesn’t mean you stop trying ($3 garage sale skates and a big sister teacher).
2. Sometimes stuff just gets in the way (playing inside the empty toy box is better than playing with the toys).
3. A new view changes the way you look at the world (family hike, looking for Dora)
4. Don’t be afraid to dream big and fly (I’ve tried this, it actually works. I dare you: tape purple tissue paper wings to your back and see if it doesn’t give you a lift!)

P.S. I’m unplugging from Twitter, my computer and iPhone tomorrow (Monday) for some deep thoughts…see y’all Tuesday for a special Mother’s Day post (hint: think photograph that defines motherhood to you). Also, I forgot to mention last week that THIS Wednesday, is a suggested themed edition of WFMW: Backwards Edition-ask your readers a question!

My Cluttered Heart

I’ve been home from Africa for nearly two months. I probably should be “over” my trip now, back to my old self. Living the life I left.
But I’m not the same. I don’t ever want to be the same again. I don’t really know where God is leading me (and my family), but it’s far away from the person I was two months ago.
In Africa I witnessed the simplicity of pure hearts. People who had nothing and everything. I looked at my own life, in my own heart and I saw poverty.
It was a terrible discovery.

I returned to my easy American life, so weighted down with stuff, closets bursting with clothes and toys, walls and shelves crowded with dozens and dozens of things. 2,000 square feet crammed with enough home decor to decorate several houses, a hobby turned into a distraction of accumulating more stuff.
Stuff that cluttered my home, but worse, cluttered my heart.
I held tightly to these objects, things I bought to fill empty places. Things don’t fill empty places, they just hide them.
For the first time, I understood the rich young ruler’s choice in Mark 10: Jesus said, “There’s one thing left: Go sell whatever you own and give it to the poor. All your wealth will then be heavenly wealth. And come follow me.” The man’s face clouded over. This was the last thing he expected to hear, and he walked off with a heavy heart. He was holding on tight to a lot of things, and not about to let go.
I looked at my own life, in my own heart and I saw poverty.
It was a beautiful discovery.
I decided to let go of the meaningless things that clutter my home and my heart:
(layer one)
I’m discovering that my materialism is like an onion…layer one has been removed, but I think I’m just getting started on clearing out the stuff (in my home and heart).
I thought I had stuff, it turns out it had me.
I want Christ. He is much greater than all the riches of the world. He fills empty places.
And cleans up cluttered hearts.

WFMW: A Tip for Moms

I don’t know about you, but my life is hectic. (And that’s after we’ve all but minimized after school activities and extracurricular events). I’d like to just unplug all the clocks and throw my watch out the window. Oh wait, that’s called summer (and it’s coming…wheee!!!)

I thought I’d share a quick Mom tip with you. It helps me manage the household duties: designate days. Pick a day for errands, one for laundry, another for cleaning the house. I even have two days for writing in bulk and Sunday afternoons are for grocery shopping.
Sticking to designated days really helps keep me from feeling overwhelmed and wanting to tackle everything (or nothing) all at once!
It works for me!
Thank you for joining me for WFMW! {You can read the guidelines here.} Have a Works-For-Me Wednesday tip you’d like to share? I’d love for you to join us!

Heroes Don’t Always Wear Capes

I sat in a crowded, dank space and listened to water drip into containers.

I squinted in the dark and leaned in to hear the quiet voice ………..

I can’t wait to see this film. I just asked for movie tickets for my family for Mother’s Day weekend. We’ve got plans, baby!

BABIES

The adventure of a lifetime begins…

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Thomas Balmès, from an original idea by producer Alain Chabat, Babies simultaneously follows four babies around the world – from birth to first steps. The children are, respectively, in order of on-screen introduction:

- Ponijao, who lives with her family near Opuwo, Namibia

- Bayarjargal, who resides with his family in Mongolia, near Bayanchandmani

- an>Mari, who lives with her family in Tokyo, Japan

- Hattie, who resides with her family in the United States, in San Francisco.

Re-defining the nonfiction art form, Babies joyfully captures on film the earliest stages of the journey of humanity that are at once unique and universal to us all.

If you have a minute, watch the short movie trailer. You’ll be glad you did!

Mama Said There’d Be Days Like This

Okay.

I’d like you to tell me about one (or seven) of your really hard days.

Why, yes, I’d love to start. Thank you.

Last week, my Mom had pneumonia and my Dad had a nasty stomach bug. I strapped my kids in the car and drove the half hour to my parent’s house to drop off some chicken soup. When I got there, my Mom was in pitiful condition and my Dad had gotten dehydrated, so much so, that he needed to go to the emergency room. My Mom was in no shape, so I drove him into town and waited in the emergency room with my children. My toddler ate a yellow Skittle off the floor while I checked my Dad in. I gagged. My son and oldest daughter got an education as the room filled with very sick people, even a gunshot wound. My hubby took them home after hour one and bathed them in Purell and I stayed with my Dad-another 7 hours. Turns out he had food poisoning and needed iv fluids, while sharing a room with a drunk granny. She had fallen pouring herself a third glass of Vodka. I’m not kidding. When I finally fell in bed at midnight, I remembered that I totally missed my monthly girl’s night out. My Mama said there’s be days like this.
My mama said.
Well. I feel better. It’s your turn. Tell me all about it:
[insert you]
In honor of you, I’m writing about motherhood this week…stay tuned for a couple of great giveaways just for Moms!

  • God and Adoption-Please read this post. It was so thought-provoking for our family. We are weighing the cost of international adoption against child sponsorship and asking God to lead us… I don’t know what we’ll do, but we will do something. (Thanks Robin, for sharing this with me).
Here’s the one I bought my daughter (but I wear sometimes) from a Kenyan woman who made them to support her family:

  • A few weeks ago, a sweet blog reader emailed me and asked me to pray for her baby in utero, Reagan Grace. She wasn’t doing well. I told I would pray and encouraged her to start a blog, so the world could carry her burden. She started a blog…in her daughter’s memory. Please help me pray for this young military family as they struggle with their great loss.

Mothering Daughters

I found this beautiful promise and pledge in the book I’m reading with my daughter, Preparing Your Daughter for Every Woman’s Battle.

If you have a daughter, please consider sharing this with her:

The Promise
“You, my dear, are a princess
and a stunningly beautiful creation of the King of the universe;
and He is absolutely, positively head over heels in love with you.
You have been richly adorned with spiritual beauty,
and your role in life is to radiate God’s magnificent glory to others.
Your mission is to live such a pure lifestyle
that your friends can’t help but be influenced by you in a really good way.
As they try to imitate you, they will begin pursuing God
and a lifestyle of sexual purity as well.
Together, you girls are going to have such fun as you celebrate God’s goodness in your lives and grow in His grace.”

based on Psalm 45:11, 13-15

The Pledge
A princess always respects parental authority.
A princess behaves the same in her parents’ absence
as she does in their presence.
A princess pursues friendships only with those both she
and her parents feel good about.
A princess doesn’t abuse her telephone privileges.
A princess surfs only parent-approved Internet Web sites.
A princess wears only clothes that look appropriate on her.
A princess gets her parents’ permission before inviting
n class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:georgia;">someone into her home or getting into a car with someone.
A princess doesn’t pursue a boyfriend or until her parents determine
that she is ready to do so.

Media teaches her that promiscuity is normal. Friends pressure her to be like everyone else. Magazines create a false sense of body image and companies vie for her attention to be placed on outward beauty. Marketing demands she dress her body like a woman, rather than a girl. The Internet offers deviation and defilement at every turn and her value system isn’t supported in our godless country.

Sometimes it feels like I’m battling against Hell itself to protect my girl.
Maybe because I am.

Fight hard for your daughter’s purity because the enemy is at war for it. Teach her early about her body and sex. Set the bar high, so that everything she hears from her friends and media will be compared to God’s standard of holiness.

Have you talked to your daughter about these things?

Because someone else will.

(a post on Mothering Sons is coming soon….)

WFMW: Organize Your Life

I’m in a scary “if it’s not been worn, used or turned on in the last 90 days, I’m finding a new home for it” phase.

Lately, I’ve just craved simplicity.
I’m sure this has something to do with it.
I want order in my home. I want purpose for my things. I want to get rid of what I don’t need or use. I want less stuff.
Tips to organize your life:
  • If you don’t use it-toss it. No exceptions. Let’s be honest, if you haven’t tackled it yet, you probably won’t.
  • If it doesn’t work (and it can’t be fixed), throw it out.
  • If you can’t wear it, don’t keep it.
  • Group like items together: books, magazines, toys, etc. Create a space (baskets are awesome) for similar items and keep them together.
  • If your things don’t have a purpose, find a new home for them. (This one is tough for me, but I’m working on it). Fill your home with sentimental memories, photos and items that mean something to you.
  • Refuse to fill up the empty, uncluttered spaces with more stuff.
Got any more that work for you?
Thank you for joining me for WFMW! {You can read the guidelines here.}Have a Works-For-Me Wednesday tip you’d like to share? I’d love for you to join us!

SheShe Made {Giveaway}

*Updated with Winner: Congrats to Four Now! You Won the $50 gift certificate to SheShe Made!
I have good intentions for my girls. I like to see them in pretty girly dresses. They would just rather wear play clothes without the coordinating hair bows. And preferably in the mud, please?
But a Mom can try.
I was so excited when SheShe Made sent me this darling dress for my precocious toddler:

Isn’t it darling? I love the little turtle with my daughter’s monogram.
It’s 100% handmade, lined, and very high quality. I had to break out the camera!
Even if she only stayed clean for 14 minutes.
SheShe Made is offering one of my readers a $50 gift certificate to choose something for your girly girl or sweet boy or even as a gift! Please visit her darling store and leave a comment on this post telling me what you’d choose!
This giveaway closes on Thursday.

Recapturing the Girl I Used to Be

I had a certain reputation in high school.

I wasn’t a bad girl, or even known for being a good girl.
I was The Christian Girl. You know the one, don’t you? I carried my Bible in my backpack and when I felt especially brave, I put it out on my desk with my name boldly inscribed on the front in small gold letters.
I took my dates (the few I had) to church youth events, or to the altar if I really liked them. I started the first Bible Club on campus with my sister and I prayed for my lost friends.
On one particular night……..
(to continue reading about my dorky self and how God answered the prayers of a young girl 15 years later, please visit (in)courage.
