WFMW: Organize a Blog Calendar

May 25, 2010 by Kristen

works for me wednesday at we are that family

Like the new WFMW button? You can get one here.

I live by my calendar. If it’s not written down, it doesn’t happen. (And that’s not because we are super busy, it’s because I’m super forgetful!)

I started a habit when I first started blogging, I keep an ongoing list of blog post ideas in a word document. Whenever I have a thought for a future post, I jot it down. These little notes don’t always become posts, but sometimes they do.

I also keep a calendar of future posts. Since I regularly schedule giveaways, I like to plan for them. Since I write most of my posts ahead of time, I plug them into dates on my calendar about two weeks out. If a timely posts happens, I just move it in ahead of what I’ve already written.ย I put the numbers 1-5 (for Mon-Fri) and I fill in the blanks. ย I know I’ll have WFMW on Wed and usually a giveaway on Tuesday.
Whenever I actually write the post, I change to color of the type, so I know it’s ready in my queue. I erase each post after it’s been published and usually have three weeks or so planned out.
This works for me and keeps me off the computer when I need to be with my family!
**Updated to Add** Next Wed., June 2 will be a themed edition: “Mom, I’m Bored” Share your best tip for keeping your child busy in the summer!

Kristen, If you choose the option that says “USE WITH SITES THAT DON’T ACCEPT JAVASCRIPT” it will show up without having to click on it. Hope this helps! Oh, and I love my calendar, too!~

I’m still tweaking my blogging organizational skills, but one thing I love is for Mother’s Day my boys got me a digital recorder. I seems to have my best blogging ideas while driving to work. Now I can talk away on my recorder and when I get back home I just plug it into my laptop and download it. Love it!

Sooooo I am soooooo jealous that you have your postings planned out 2-3 weeks ahead of time! I totally need to use your calendar idea. Right now I seem to have a one track mind where I’ll post 3 receipes in a row, or craft projects or embroidery tutorials or whatever. I can’t wait to get organized. Thanks for sharing!

Blogging can be so addicting! I have just started writing a bit of a calendar myself, so funny that you wrote about it here. But, since my blog is so new and likely only of interest to a small groups of folks right now, I don’t need to do things two weeks ahead of time, ensuring lots of posts. I simply schedule the idas I have. On the flip side, I have far too many things I want to write about, so i am trying to discipline myself not to do so at the expense of my family. Thank you for the encouragement!

I’m so glad your new site lets me post comments! Before, I had the wrong type of account or something, and I felt a little guilty doing WFMW without ever leaving you comments about enjoying your posts.

I also keep a running list of topics, but I keep it on paper and carry it with me so that I can stay away from the computer even when I’ve had an idea! But my list isn’t nearly as organized as yours.

I figured this out about a week into blogging. I realized that since we’re not going to have internet in a week or so (at home, that is–library is only a mile away), I will need to have posts scheduled well in advance. So I’ve been doing that calendar idea already, and have most of my topics scheduled as well. That way my visitors have fresh content every day, even though I may not be online for days at a time.

Thanks for hosting, this is my first week participating and it’s been great! I’ve found some new blogs to read and had some new visitors… it’s great!

I also write my blog posts in advance, and schedule my tweets and facebook status with hootsuite. This allows me to promote my articles at the times that have maximum impact, without having to be at my computer. I’m usually busy with the kids during the day, so I really rely on wordpress and hootsuite to roll everything out at the right times.

I’m already thinking something up for next week; this is great!

With your new format, is it possible to enable us to right click the links so we can open them in a new tab? It automatically opens a new tab when you click the link but it goes straight to there so you have to come back and forth to open another. I like to open a bunch read them and come back and open some more.

Hi! Beth at HomeStoriesAtoZ referred me to you for help with my WordPress blog. I’m two months in, and I love it, but… I’m having terrible tech difficulties creating a grab-it box for a blog button on my sidebar on WordPress. I use the “text” widget on my sidebar, I enter the code and my button appears , however I cannot seem to get the little “grab it box” with code to copy to display. When i enter my code, i can get the button to workand link wherever i want, but when i renter the code hoping to create the “grab it box,” the working button appears, again. I cannot for the life of me seem to create the “box” to contain the code for others to copy/paste. ๐Ÿ™ I’m trying and trying and trying… You can see where I’m stuck: http://whatamberloves.com/2012/08/23/files-for-new-whatamberloves-button/ I even tried just containing it by using the view mode and having guests copy it directly from a post, but i REALLY want a grab it box. Can you help me? Please? Thank you so much, in advance. ~Amber of WhatAmberLoves.com (amberdhenson@att.net)
