not sure of your intentions about the glen beck article but i must say that it’s very hurtful to hear that other christians don’t beleive that mormons are christians and say that we beleive in a different jesus…..that simply is NOT true. http://jesuschrist.lds.org/SonOfGod/eng/

I am Mormon and appreciated the Glenn Beck link. I think he is over the top and is more concerned about marketing himself than he is about helping Christians. That article provided an interesting perspective that I hadn’t heard in the media.

In reading this article and your first comment, I can see this whole Glenn Beck event hurting a lot of Mormon feelings. That is unfortunate. I am not Mormon, but an Evangelical. The problem Evangelicals have with Mormon doctrine is that it adds to the Gospel–there are extra burdens on people that God never intended. Jesus’ death on the cross doesn’t quite cover it for Mormons. They have to do good works, as well, to secure their salvation. They have “levels” of heaven, and have to do more to get to the highest level. They also believe that man can become like a God. These different beliefs fundamentally change what Jesus came to do. We are supposed to be “saved by grace through faith, not of ourselves, lest any man boast” All we have to do is believe and repent. Nothing more. If we are sincere, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in us, and He changes us. We don’t change ourselves. Nothing holy that comes out of our Christianity is of us. It’s all of Him.

I believe there are many Mormons who have personal relationships with Jesus Christ. Those relationships can be so solid, that it’s no wonder they are hurt when people hint that they aren’t Christians. Mostly, it depends on how much of the Mormon doctrine they have internalized–made their own. If they are truly trusting only in Jesus for salvation, God knows that. And that’s all that matters.

If you enjoyed the former article on Glen Beck you might like to read this one as well! Very well thought out and studies according the doctrine he adheres to! It is called Have we Annointed and Unworthy Shepherd.

I responded to the “Take Your Vitamin Z” blog there, but I will say something here as well. I am not Mormon, but I also find the article hurtful. I have not been “duped” by Glenn Beck. I am not even a follower or fan. Recently, our pastor delivered a message about toxic religion. The article linked here promotes it. Christians spendso much time and energy bashing other faiths and pointing fingers at each other that they lose sight of the big picture. Our nation is in trouble. Our world is in trouble. We are lost. Glenn Beck is indeed using his political/television spotlight to deliver a faith message. Good. More public figures should. He is not calling us all to become Mormon. He is asking us to stand together and fight for what is right and good. Our country’s morality is in jeopardy simply because we have NOT stood together. Isn’t it more important that we support one another?

    Zach Nielsen says:

I would encourage those here to read this post to get a better understanding of the key differences between Christianity and Mormonism. The basic difference comes down to The Trinity. Plainly said, no Trinity = no Christianity.

    Zach Nielsen says:

The point of this article is the diminishing of doctrine on the part of Biblical Christians for the sake of political expediency. It is ok to support a candidate who is not a Christian, but just don’t support them in the name of God and the name of “revival”. This is insane. The God of Christianity and is extremely different than the God of Mormonism. This is just a raw fact (seek above link).

Might be good for the naysayers to review this paragraph from Dr. Moore’s piece.

“Fox News commentator Glenn Beck, of course, is that Mormon at the center of all this. Beck isn’t the problem. He’s an entrepreneur, he’s brilliant, and, hats off to him, he knows his market. Latter-day Saints have every right to speak, with full religious liberty, in the public square. I’m quite willing to work with Mormons on various issues, as citizens working for the common good. What concerns me here is not what this says about Beck or the “Tea Party” or any other entertainment or political figure. What concerns me is about what this says about the Christian churches in the United States.”

His post was for Christians to read and to be wary of placing our hope for “revival” and restoration in our nation away from the Gospel of Jesus Christ and flows through his church.

Kirsten, I love your blog. I love your heart. I am frequently convicted by your writing and and called to search my own heart. Thank you.

Please read the links Zach has provided. The LDS church is not just another denomination of Christianity. Far from it. Speaking the truth about Mormon doctrine isn’t hurtful. Be careful of falling into religious correctness. The truth must be spoken with love and compassion but without apology. Whenever Mormon missionaries come to our home, my husband and I welcome them in. They will not truthfully answer key questions and as soon as they realize we know a lot about their beliefs, they leave.
It is possible to be very moral and not be a Christian. Being moral will not save our nation, our world or a single soul. Only a personal relationship with Jesus Christ brings salvation.

Thank you for your comment. I agree with you, I do not believe in the Mormon faith and based on their theology, I think it’s heresy. But this isn’t really the platform to prove them wrong. I’m not afraid to stand up for my Christian faith, but I’d rather my life be the example than my opinion.

    Zach Nielsen says:

“I’d rather my life be the example than my opinion.”

This is a great sentiment, but Paul added “doctrine” to the list.

1 Tim. 4:16 – “Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching.” It is orthopraxy AND orthodoxy. We can never separate these two.

    kriswithmany says:

I too am hurt by the Glenn Beck article. So many do not really understand what we believe. We believe that Jesus Christ is the divine Son of God, and through his atonement we can return to our Father in Heaven. That is the center of our doctrine.

You can dislike Glenn Beck, what he is doing, etc. I don’t follow everything he does, but I can say I don’t agree with everything he says. But to attack him because “Mormons aren’t Christians” is just wrong. Why can’t we encourage each other in our common beliefs? We have so much in common. That is why I enjoy your blog.
