For Every Mother’s Daughter

August 25, 2013 by Kristen

It was more than an hour past her bedtime and she appeared at the edge of our bedroom door. Again. It had been the same dance all summer. And my feet were tired. What I really wanted to do was point my finger and march her back to bed. But I knew one day she would stay in bed. She saw my indecision and her lip trembled. So instead I invited her to come to me. She walked slowly to the side of my bed. Her face streaked with tears and I knew she was afraid again. As soon as I ... Read More

A Prayer for My Children as They Return to School

August 21, 2013 by Kristen

Dear God, School starts on Monday. Thank you, thank you (sincere holy whisper). We both know that momma's bag 'o summer tricks is plum empty and hiding in the bathroom while my children argue upstairs is not going to work much longer. We've got brand new school supplies tucked neatly into clean backpacks. The kids each have squeaky new tennis shoes and their first day of school clothes picked out, except for my son who doesn't care, but you know that already. Thank you for providing every ... Raising Christian Kids in an Ungodly World

July 31, 2013 by Kristen

I picked up my nephew from football practice the other day and while I waited, I watched the other high school kids interact outside my car window. A pretty girl walked out of the gym from a cross-country workout session and a group of guys started yelling inappropriate things at her. She gave them "the finger" and a dirty look and then walked up to window and leaned in seductively to whisper something in the boy's ear. There was raunchy laughter and arm punching. Tires spinning. More cat ... Read More

DIY: Pallet Headboard

July 17, 2013 by Kristen

She saw a pallet headboard at a flea market and had to have it. I saw the price tag and said keep walking. But my 13 year old daughter didn't forget the bed and she showed a picture to her Dad and batted her long lashes for months. She didn't know if he could make it, but she knew he would try. Because he's that kind of a Dad. Supplies for our $50 Pallet Headboard: 2-3 weathered pallets 2 2x4's light kit (optional) Old barn wood would have worked well, but we ... Read More

What Every Husband Needs to Hear

June 20, 2013 by Kristen

I wrote this to honor my husband on Father's Day, but didn't have a chance to post it last week. Thanks for all the emails and love.   When he walked thru the door, I let out the breath I'd been holding for days. The pinch in-between my shoulders eased and the throbbing in my head paused. My husband was home. He is my other half, the calm to my temper, the quiet to my chatter, the hard shoulder for my weary head. Grief has changed us this year. The easy ebb and ... Read More

What I Want My Kids to Know About Sex

May 19, 2013 by Kristen

My husband settled in for The Talk with my son many months ago. After explaining the um, mechanics of the parts, my son stopped his dad and said, "From now on, can we just refer to everything as Thing One and Thing Two?" It sort of ruined Dr. Seuss for all of us. We've been talking about sex in our house with our older kids lately. They are at the age where it's being mentioned or joked about in some way nearly every day. And my husband and I want to be a part of their sex ... Read More
